EEG Results/Metabolic Disorders?
Years ago, my daughter had 2 EEGs which showed similar results. The summary says "moderately abnormal EMG for a child of this age because of right frontotemporal and bilateral bursting slow waves. The findings are non-specific, but might be seen interictally." Follow-up with neuros say it doesn't mean anything and that if she were to have a seizure, "you'd know it." She has problems which we're still searching for answers to.
Fast forward 5-7 years, my husband has a grand mal seizure -- adult onset and they have no idea why, but he's on a pretty high dose of Depakote to keep seizures under control. Four more years later, our younger daughter is being worked up for possible metabolic/mitochondrial disorders. Has no sign of seizures, but in researching one, MSUD, that she's being looked at for, it says that a an "interictal EEG with runs of 5 to 7 Hz monophasic, central, or parasagittal negative activity during awake or sleep" is common with MSUD, calling it a "Unique EEG pattern (comb-like rhythm)." So, I go back to my oldest's old EEGs and wonder if her results match this. But, I have no idea what they mean by "comb-like rhythm." What would a "comb-like rhythm" on an EEG report look like? |
Hi Laura,
Welcome to the forum! Just like your daughter I have right temporal lobe and frontal lobe seizures caused by scar tissue on the RTL (right temporal lobe) I had brain surgery done twice to help reduce my sz. and they found that my scar was bilaterial which can either slow down or increase the brain wave of a person if it speeds up it can cause sz. for the person. If I may ask how old is your daughter? The reason why I'm asking is because if she's going through puberty that's the time sz. will show because the hormones are changing in the body which can cause sz. I'm no Dr. but it sounds like the problem with your daughter may be genetic. You should ask your husband if anyone on his side of the family has any sz. or nervous disorder because often it can run in the family genes. My best advice to you is for your daughter to go to an Epilepsy Center and see an Epileptologist - Dr. specializing in epilepsy this Dr. can also help your husband. I've seen many different neuros. over the yrs. and take my word none of them have helped me like an epileptologist has and I take the least amount of meds. If you check out this website you can get more info. on e.e.g.'s and the readings. http://www.emedicine.com/neuro/index.shtml#seizures www.epilepsy.com Here's wishing you and your family the best of luck? May God Bless All of You! Sue |
