Motor Neurone Disease website to provide support

A NEW website has been launched to help Motor Neurone Disease sufferers and their families.
MND is a progressive, fatal disease of the nervous system that affects adults of any age.

The rate of progression varies but life expectancy after the first onset of symptoms is just two to five years.

There is no specific test for MND and by

the time of diagnosis the disease is often well advanced. The cause is unknown and at present, there is no cure.

The number of people in the Island with MND varies. Earlier this year the Motor Neurone Disease Association Isle of Man, which was formed in 1993, was aware of up to 10 people with the condition.

Chairman Sue Robinson said: 'We are here as a charity supporting the person with MND, the person looking after them and their family.'

The charity's recently launched website explains about the local branch of the charity, the support it offers and details of forthcoming events.

'People are going through this situation, which is a huge thing, and we would like to think that they have got access to the information they need to make choices,' Sue said.

'The internet is a very comfortable way to contact and find information because they haven't got to make the step of ringing and talking to people – if they are feeling vulnerable it could be quite daunting.'

She added: 'There's always someone you can talk to face to face if you want to.'

Forthcoming events planned by the charity include a Come Fly With Us Dinner at Isle of Man Airport on September 20 and a study day at Keyll Darree, Noble's Hospital, Braddan, on September 26.
