Q for someone who sews

I made a very simple skirt for myself out of knit fabric. It is an A-line skirt made from matching front and back pieces. I had several problems and think I have all but one figured out.

When the skirt is on me or a hanger the seams do not lay smoothly. I vaguely remember reading a lifetime ago when sewing with knits you start at wide end and sew to the narrow. Or should that be the opposite?

I have no idea what I did as I wasn't paying attention. I finished the skirt before noticing the problem and just wore it as is out of desperation. :o I've been trying to think it through and figure it out but I don't trust my thinking. Help! I really need to make more skirts.

Getting back into sewing

Hi, WeaveHerr. I remember making knit skirts when in college, and my mom always advised me to use a longer stitch to allow the thread to "stretch" with the fabric. Attached is a helpful website that explains how to choose and sew knit fabric. Hopefully it will help with your quandry. :) Good luck!

hey Weave ... I do alot of quilting .. but with Cotton ..

I did learn that when working with knit (or fleece) .. that when you 'tug' on an edge .. and it CURLS ... the side that it CURLS towards is the right side... I use alot of fleece for the back of my quilts ... sometimes it doesn't matter when it's solid ...

also ... drop the pressure foot, loosen the pressure for both top and bottom .. and use a 'ball' end needle...

Foggy Brain- Thanks for the link. Actually I found it while searching for my answer before posting here. It is a really good website and I will look at it again before sewing my next skirt.

Vonn07- Thanks for the curls to the right side tip. I didn't know that nor read it yet. I do know I was using the wrong needle. I got a nice set of sharps and ballpoints so now I am ready for anything. Machine pressure may have been a problem too.

I have a quilting project or two laying around here I need to finish. I hope to make that a winter project. Finish all my UFOs. (unfinished objects)
