Palm Oil questions

I'm just curious about the use of palm oil in other countries in the world. I'm wondering if your labelling regulations require actually listing _all_ ingredients in products e.g. this oil, that oil, palm oil etc., or are multiple oils generally listed as one product on your goods - oil?

Another thing I was wondering was if you know the origin of the palm oil in products on your shelves? If you're in the US e.g., does your palm oil come from South America or South East Asia or somewhere else?

tough question!

I think we will be seeing MORE palm oil, since the transfat business is really
becoming an issue here in USA. Palm oil will be substituted a lot I think.

This is the oil I use...

It is fairly expensive, but we don't use one bottle/yr typically, so it is not
much of a burden for us. This oil really tastes GOOD too, but you have to
get past the color. It is really good with eggs, and stir fry.

Thanks for that. I didn't know it could be bought as a separate oil. The colour is interesting!

It's the transfat issues that got me thinking and wondering how it's marketed where you are. It's in so many products here now but hidden under the umbrella of "vegetable oil". The problem is that there's a bit of an ecological disaster concerning palm oil plantations happening in certain places in the world not far from Australia and it's really concerning me. This all made me curious about where the palm oil that you all eat is grown and how it's labelled. At the moment I'm using little oil, and when I do I use a cold pressed extra virgin olive oil and have some grape seed oil too. I've got to the stage with my cooking that it doesn't taste like my cooking anymore 'cause I'm leaving out half the ingredients for either health reasons or other reasons. lol

hmmmm...

I just looked this up... destroying orangutan habitats? eeeekKKKKK

You know, I only recall one thing I read a long time ago in a book by
M.L Gittleman dietican. == Your Body Knows Best.

She mentioned the factoid that indigenous peoples who normally consume palm oil as their typical source...do not have any negative effects from it.
Asians were given as an example.

But I have not followed this saga closely. I will have to look this up for my new EFA thread that is in progress for here. Anything has to be better than transfats! I hope, that is!:p

Dr. Mercola has strong feelings about it

He has much good info on his site. Occasionally I think he goes a bit off (but who does anyone agree with all the time?). His philosophy and most of his information I have found to be great.

Try plugging Dr. Mercola into Google with palm.
