Question about Ferritin level?
Alan just came back from seeing Dr. Fred. They discussed the blood test he took last week.
All numbers were fine. But his Ferritin level was 508 and of course that kicked it in the abnormal column. It indicates that normal is from 20-380 ng/mL (not that I understand this at all). When Alan was doing the blood test thing years ago, it was definitively ruled out that he had hemachromatosis. (believe me he took numerous tests on that one). But always there is this number that is usually higher than normal. His other Iron numbers are: IRON AND IRON BINDING CAP Iron, Total 79 TIBC 241 (normal is 250-425 mcg/dL TRANSFERRIN SATURATION 33 TSH, 3rd generation 2.45 T4, free 1.2 T3 UPTAKE 28 T3 TOTAL 113 And then there's the Ferritin number which is 508. Of course he asked Dr. Fred about this and Dr. Fred assured him it doesn't mean anything and he would be concerned if it was LOW. So all together, he's doing fine, but I'm just darn curious why the heck his Ferritin Level is 508. He doesn't eat spinach, he doesn't take any iron pills. Anyone have a clue. No emergency, just curious. Thanks much. Melody |
Mel tell Alan I'll take some of his Ferritin. Mine is low at 25 :p
Even though its high his total iron is fine and his TIBC looks good. I am guessing he just has good storage. |
The Mayo web site has good information on ferritin .
