Morning Kidney Pain
 

Hi all,
I've been searching the internet for answers to why my kidneys hurt every morning (I think it's my kidneys?). There is not much out there. It tends to refer to renal failure or stones. I doubt I have either. So I am asking my board buddies to share what they may know about it. I suspect one of two things at this point.

1. Not enough water.
2. Vicodin, daily.

My back hurts mostly in the morning upon waking, but aches all day long. This is a different pain than my osteoarthritis in my low back. Between the two it just gives me an overall feeling of ick.

My Uncle has Diabetes...and I have been tested for that in the past...but that seemed to come up with my search too.

Any knowlegeable thoughts would be appreciated.

I would start by increasing the amount of water intake, but also ask your PCP for a referral to a urologist ASAP. The urologist can help.

When I am dehydrated I feel the same way.

Hey GJ's~ From a Mom who has a DS w/a kidney transplant... Let me ask a couple of ????? Do you have any pain or burning when voiding? Is your urine frothy looking??

All it takes is a blood test to see if your creatinine or BUN are elevated to show kidney function. A urine sample would show if there is protein present. But, I agree w/Vic in that you should contact your PCP tomorrow if it's still bothering you. Not all back pain in the kidney area is from the actual kidney. Better to be safe than sorry, so I'd follow up on it.

No, I don't have any urinary problems and this pain came on months ago. I just deal with it every day. I thought maybe I needed more water intake or stop the hydrocodone. I'll try and get into a doctor and find out what's going on...if anything. Thanks

I still have a kidney stone that has been there over 15 yrs.

When it was flaring up (infection or whatever), I felt about as you describe - pain, and ick.

I did not have discomfort urinating, like with a UTI. But the urine was often darker than normal.

I was going to say see a urologist. Could be the vicodin is hard on the kidney, and you may have an infection or something. They do things other than get stones and just outright fail. A doc will figure that out. Usually, a urine sample and/or an x ray will dx it quick. Good luck.

Hmmmm....I wonder....I guess I'm so used to feeling crummy that it never occured to me that I may have a medical issue. My Dad had stones years ago...I wonder.

The first stone, age 17, I had the OMG!!! sharp pains like I had appendicitis. But not with the latter stone. That one is really big - it was the size of an almond last we x-rayed. It was the place where it formed - like in a corner, kind of stuck - was why it didn't just come out I guess. Which is how it got so big.


I had lithotrypsy 2x, broke it up, but it kept reforming. We gave up on it. As long as I'm not too infected it's no big deal. I had probs for a couple years, but if I drink enough water it tends to not bug me.

I still feel it roll around at times when I lay down, but it doesn't hurt.

Still, the sooner you know for sure, the sooner - hopefully - you'll feel better.
