post traumatic seizures
Hello I am new to this site and was wondering if anyone knew about post traumatic seizures?
My husband was in a car accident 4 weeks ago and they have said he has a traumatic brain injury. 2 days after the accident he started having seizures, he was having a bout 2 a day, he is now having between 4- 8 a day the doctors have done a EEG which has shown that it is not epilepsy, so they said it is post traumtic seizures. They have said that they can not say how long they will take to stop and I was wondering if anyone on here has had them and how long they took to stop? Thanks Jo |
Hi Jo,
Post traumatic injuries to the brain can cause a person to have seizures. Trauma can cause seizures for a person also. I was in an auto accident 7 yrs. ago and had a concussion this caused swelling of the brain which in turn caused me to have more seizures than I usually do. My advice to you and your husband is to get a calendar and write down each time your husband has a seizure along with a discription of the seizure by doing this the neurologist may see a pattern in your husbands seizures. Also tell your husband to take vitamin B12 1000 mcg. a day and stay away from nutra sweet or anything like it because nutra sweet (aspartame) causes more electrical activity in the brain which can trigger seizures. My seizures never stopped but they decreased after about 1 year but everyone is different. To get the best advice and help I would advise you to go to an Epilepsy Center which are often at University Hospitals and have your husband see and Epileptologist (Dr. specializing in epilepsy) I've gotten more help from an epileptologist than any neuro I've ever seen and I've had seizures for 36 yrs. I've also found I take a lot less meds seeing an epileptologist than when I've seen any neuros. Here's wishing you and your husband the best of luck and May God Bless You Both! Sue |
