Political discussions

If every member of NT is to follow NT's rules or suffer the consequences, then every member should!

I'm tired of all the political opinions and attacks. One member was banned for being too controversial (in more way than one), so I would like to see all of those controversial threads stopped. They are upsetting me.

I have forwarded your comments to Doc, Doody so that he can reply personally

the mod team had asked for a total ban on political posts as we were concerned for these upsets. Doc had hoped reason would prevail.

I am so sorry you have been upset as I know others have been too.

Doody 09-05-2008 11:32 AM

That's fine.

I just believe that if one person gets in trouble for going on tangents, then others should as well. I'm tired of reading all the political garbage on here.

Thanks.

the rules are being fairly applied to all Doody and please remember things also take place behind the scenes that you may not be aware of.

we do not show partiality here

Please report posts that you find offensive or bothersome - that is how we get feedback to know how things are going.

If a specific poster's style is upsetting , you can place them on Ignore also.

Unless posts are reported - we can only guess at what is upsetting.

I understand all of that.

Thanks.

But please let's be careful--

--that we don't go to far in the other direction.

Any post about any subject is potentially annoying/disturbing/triggering to someone, somewhere. But part of living in a democracy is that we have to have a certain tolerance for opinions and the like we find distasteful. The balance between letting things come into the light and holding from view those same things on the grounds that they may offend is tenuous at best. (Remember the cartoons in the Danish newspapers?)

My opinion in this area in fairly well-known from other arenas--as long as a post is not libelous, leaving the site open to suit, a lot of latitutde should be allowed, as sunlight is the best disenfectant, you can't discuss what you can't engage in, and pushing things under the rug never did anything but lump up the rug . . .and make a lot of people trip.

for what it is worth....

I think this election is going to be "nuts"....it already is bothering me, bigtime.

For people who are ill, it has to be a huge stressor.

I am not going to get into discussions at all (I rarely do anyway). And I probably will not vote because of how I feel this time around. It just isn't worth it. The political machine will go its way regardless, IMO. Today on CNN I heard a correspondent echo my feelings...so I am not alone in this at all. (I was feeling guilty). I have been basically a Democrat with liberal leanings to independent.

McCain was in my state today...all of our news was about it. I turned it off. We have had such grief already here with the Mayor, I don't need more politics! As far as I am concerned we can get rid of the executive branch, for good.

The most interesting thing I have seen has been ads for McCain's potatoes... They are really funny.
That is as far as I go.

just an FYI for anyone who may not yet have seen it

Doc did make a recent post about his views on political topics at NT

While I am certain that my general irreverence around here is not always appreciated, I am also very irritated by the political discussions here. We're about support here, however that may be supplied to one another. All I see from the political threads is one wedge after another being driven between otherwise friendly people.

There are hundreds of political forums all over the net, if a handful wish to partake, I would feel better if they did that particular part of their communications via PMs or elsewhere.

I'm not a terribly sensitive person, but it hurts me to see so many people going after one another with no citations or direct sources. Doc specifically said no rumor or innuendo would be tolerated and those seem to be virtually the entire composition of every post in those threads.

I AM sensitive to the fact that the gracious mods, who are all volunteers, seem to be working overtime to keep things tidy. It's not fair to them.

If this is offensive, please PM me, no need to turn this thread into an argument.

Thanks.
