Question - EEG report

Hi.. I was wondering if anyone can shed some light on this?

A driving response from photic stimulation - is this the response u are suppose to get. does anyone know?

My EEG report says "within normal limits" under the impression. I guess what bothers me about it is...if it's normal just say it's normal. I don't like the "within" part.

Hi lynxgal,
I'm not a Dr. but I think what they are trying to say is that your seizures may be triggered by photosensitive matters, that's when bright light can trigger seizures. The reason why they are probably saying within is because the e.e.g will read 8 areas of the brain and some of the areas are in the normal reading range while possibly there may be more electrical activity in other parts of the brain. For example my e.e.g. always shows more electrical activity in the right temporal lobe because that's the area that's triggering my seizures. I hope I have been of some help. I wish you the best of luck and May God Bless You!

the EEG

My EEG report response wasn't too good either the first time. I was in the hospital for 2 weeks and didn't have a seizure. Then he was going to let me go and say that i was having mental seizures. Then the last day i could i had the seizures, so he kept me for a additional week.
Now because of your senses, it could be photo sensative just like your last response said. But also do you have them when you're being real active? If i'm out play tennis or basketball with a friend. I'm guaranteed to have a seizure or two. Being photo sensative is a moderate problem for people with epilepsy, it's not rare. Now you take care.

You can go to www.epilepsyfoundation.org They have a piece to click on that gives advice on how to speak with your neurologist, and you can also send them an email question. Then they will send you the response, or one of their pro's will answer a question for you. The only thing that's bad about them is they don't have a chat. Now you take care.

Thanks for the replies Porkette & Shawn.

Shawn...I don't really know what is going on. I'm trying to find the cause of the sensation that my brain is shaking inside my head. It also feels like my brain is rebooting at the same time or shortly after the shaking sensation.

My dad witnessed one of my episodes and he said that I was talking and clearing the table and then all of a sudden my movements slowed down and I stopped talking and my eyelids fluttered. It only lasted maybe 10 seconds though.

I have recently be dx with a sensory motor polyneuropathy that we are still investigating. I don't know if these brain quaking episodes are related or what they are. Or if the two are part of a bigger picture.

I should also mention I have a very long history of classic migraines. Maybe that is why I had the driving response to the photic stimulation.

Does anyone know what the average background volts range should be?

Thank you for sharing and for the link.

Having a normal EEG can be maddening when it does not really explain what is going on! My son's EEG can be normal between seizures for the most part even with the long video eegs. (we have had 7 video eegs now) He DID have some abnormalities in 5 of the 7< but they managed to try to talk themselves out of them except the last that were spikey ENOUGH (i kept saying LOOK it is the same locations EACH time down to the electrodes!! Left frontal, left temporal t7,t9, F7, F9, NOT a coincidence! anyway....

People with partial epilepsy can have normal EEGs interictally (between seizures) up to 50% of the time!
Normal driving response and within normal limits...(doctor speak, don't you love it)......sigh. I am not sure what that range is.

Hang in there!

For Ginny:

You seem to know quite alot about the EEG's...so i pose you some questions since my dr's wont answer mine ...sighs.....i have had three now...two of which i was completely unconscious for...but all have come back normal, two were right after status events were stabilized, the last one was an inpatient video eeg....he said " we are going to establish a base line and monitor you for up to four days." i had two seizures, he releases me...and says Not only am i epileptic but im also having non epileptic seizures, mind u this dr never witnessed an epileptic seziure on the eeg...just NES...according to him. im so lost, i have three brain lesions and now they say i had to have been abused as a child and something traumatic to be having these that wont respond to the ONE med they have tried.:S Are EEG's the END ALL BE ALL of diagnosis for epileptic seizures?? do they ALWAYS detect epileptic activity? and...are they always interpeted correctly or is there room for interpetation depending on the doctor?

You can have both Epilepsy and Non Epileptic Seizures, and
like Ginny had posted, it can be maddening!

I have to imply with this fact here - consider this from the
other side of the fence, I've had abnormalities, sub-clinicals,
clinicals, epileptiforms, normal, yadda, yadda, yaddas ... on
EEG's ... and my Scans from all sorts are all abnormal; and
I'm Dx'd as "Epilepsy, intractable" - with a long list of specific
types of epilepsies...

NOW - try to get a Doctor to treat me is, well, you might as
well go and bang your head on the wall; because that is
about just as far as I've gone! MADDENING!

  • It's asinine to be misdiagnosed!
  • It's insane to have 1 EEG run and it comes up "normal" and be insulted by being slapped in your face as "it's all in your
head" (or some other type of rude remark)
  • It's crazier when you've got tons of stuff lying before them and they don't do anything about it!
  • Or they blame it on something else, with an attitude of not wanting to be bothered!

Do you feel alone? You shouldn't! There are
tons of people out there ranging from hairs
standing on the end of their skin to their faces
turning beat red in anger out of dire frustration!

And meanwhile ... they seize!

There's a huge STIGMA in this area, and it's sad
as well as scary, that one must fight to be treated
or one must go great distances, just to find a
Neurologist or Epileptologist to be treated properly.

So the question is ... "While yes it is possible for one
to have both Epilepsy and Non-Epileptic Seizures, but
due to the response and attitude per se of the posting
I question the overall Doctor's report ..."

I strongly recommend for a 2nd Opinion or for
another Neurologist or Epileptologist, it may be
time for a change!
