SSA Disability Questions

New to this forum. Does anyone here collect SSA for "polyneuropathy" and/or
"diabetic nephrology".

I am a married 44yr old type 2 diabetic diagnosed in 1996. My social security statement indicated I have worked enough for disability benefits of $1294 a month. I have 4 children under the age of 18. Do SSA benefits based upon your husband's income? What is the maximum amount allowed? It says my children's survivor benefit would be 1,003 per month per child is this the same amount as disability? Do you automatically receive Medicare for your health insurance?

Over the years due to poor management of my diabetes I have now developed (2) "confirmed" complications

1. Severe Polyneuropathy - confirmed by EMG 10/02/08
2. Stage 3 Nephrology (protein levels in my urine since 2000)

I am currently collect short term disability since 8/4/08 through my employer and after 2/2009 short term will end however I will be eligible for longterm disability.

I applyed for SSA online last week and have a phone interview setup for Wednesday. Does anyone have any suggestions or helpful tips.

Thanks

Hi Colbey.

The children's survivor benefit is what your kids would get if you were dead.

If you get SSDI, they will together be eligible for a total of $646 (not each) ...........which is 1/2 of your monthly benefit

You are eligible for Medicare 24 months after the date that SS says you were disabled....in your case that might mean SS aproves you for SSDI on 5/5/09, but they recognize your date of disability as 8/2008, then they will send you a MC card and start deducting $96 from each check in 10/2010.

I hope that you are approved quickly............it takes for ever for some of us
