Dad's CT scan results -- Bad news

Findings: Widespread lymphadenopathy was present within the neck, supraclavicular, axillary and mediastinal regions with enlarged lymph nodes which were too numerous to count.

A soft tissue mass within the right axillary region which is presumed to represent a very enlarged lymph node had a maximum dimension of about 8 cm. The largest lymph node within the left axillary region measured about 4.5 cm. Lymph nodes wtihin both supraclavicular regions measured between 5 and 22 mm.

There is a 3 cm. lymph node posterior to the mid trachea to the right of midline displacing the esophagus slightly toward the left.

Multiple other enlarged lymph nodes are present within the mediastinum measuring up to 2 cm. in diameter.

There is an irregularly shaped oval nodule within the anterior left lower lung field just above the diaphragm measuring 13 mm. in maximum dimension. It appears slightly spiculated. There is no obvious calcification present.

There are 2 oval shaped low density lesions within the right thyroid lobe, the largest measuring 12 mm., both having the appearance of cysts.

There is no other significant abnormality apparent allowing for patient's age.

Impression: Widespread lymphadenopathy involving the neck, supraclavicular and axillary regions bilaterally and mediastinum.

This is most like the result of either one of the lymphomas, Hodgkin's disease or leukemia. The possibility that they are metastatic from some

other primary source cannot be ruled out. Differentiation should be possible with a biopsy.

13 mm. pulmonary nodule at the left lung base which could represent a neoplasm or granuloma.

Its appearance would tend to favor a neoplasm and could be primary in origin.

The Physician's Assistant, Kevin Anderson, said that the blood work indicates it is unlikely to be leukemia.

Dad does not want to have chemotherapy.

Kevin asked if Dad wanted to meet with a Cancer specialist. I said yes, so he will set that appointment up.

Dad seems to be taking the news better than I am. I'm so glad he is not in any pain.

He's 95 years old. I thought he was indestructible.

Well, crap. Not what we were hoping for at all.

You know I just went down a long road with my own dad, Twink; all I can tell you for sure is that my dad genuinely appreciated it when we honored and defended his wishes.

I'll be praying for him and all of you. ><>

Oh Twink.....I'm so sorry. You know you've got lots of prayers offered up for both you and your sweet Dad. I do hope they can treat this without too much upheaval in his life. It's very hard to watch our parents go through things like this. Like you said, they're supposed to be indestructible.
