Fentanyl Question
I know many of us folks who've suffered from wicked brain injuries & other awful things are given Fentanyl, along with a myriad of other meds to kill the pain.
I am on 100mcg of Fentanyl. I just don't think it's doing the job because the pain is still ruthless. I also notice that there is no patch that's bigger than 100mcg. My question is ... What do I do if my doctor wants to up it to (say for instance) 125mcg. Does this require me having 2 patches? If that's the deal, I know some people who are suffering from terminal cancer can be on 1,000mcg of Fentanyl. Are these folks wearing 10 patches??? A little help & clarification would be great. Thank you. Joe |
the highest I have seen in
long term care is 350mcg for dying patients.
Fentanyl patches are a "convenience" solution. So for people who are moving about life, they are useful. For bedridden other options exist. Yes, you just stack more patches on. Some doctors add oral fentanyl, or other oral or injectable agents (if in a nursing home or hosp it might be a morphine pump). Combining agents is done, commonly in the terminally ill. There are typically severe side effects of nausea, or severe constipation however, the higher you go dose wise. |
