Bone density test
Hello all! MY GP wants me to have a bone density test in a few weeks.......is that the "norm"?
I know that 'roids rob us of vitamin d, etc, but have your docs suggested a test for you? I've only been on steriods for 7 months now, so I can't imagine that any real "harm" has been done - plus I take 1800 mgs of calcium w/vitamin d daily (per my hema)................ Do any of you crave WHOLE milk or OJ wit lots of pulp? I go through it like water!:D Any input would be appreciated! Erin |
Yep Erin I've had 2 since I've been diagnosed.
The last one I had was good because they recommended a daily calcium intake to keep my bones happy and healthy while I am on pred. Yes I do go thru stages of craving milk, and don't like the low fat stuff, and I can't eat oranges as they have bad effects on my, but ate a couple a few weeks ago, cos I was just hugely craving them?!?! wierd. Maybe they contain potassium, and I know I'm low in that, and I take tablets but still crave other things that contain potassium. redtail |
Hi Erin,
Yes, steroids cause osteoporosis and although a high calcium diet is strongly recommended, it is advisable to monitor bone density, I had my first check (as a reference) at the beginning 14 months ago and I will have the second one next January. Be carefull with biphosphonate supplements frequently prescribed as they are reported to cause jaw bone necrosis…Dentists should be informed of their intake! Maurice. |
I haven't had a bone density test and I've been on steriods for almost exactly a year now. Should I ask about this when I go see my new neuro or my GP? I don't want to put anyone out or look like I'm questioning their professional judgement.
I've been taking 800mg of calcium, no vitamin D and 50 mg for potassium. Those are just my supplements - obviously I get more nutrients from my food - I try to eat pretty healthy. Lots of fruit and veg. I didn't drink a lot of milk as a child. Erin, I do crave juice but not milk (I'm still not a milk person). Take care! ~Kathy |
Yes indeed Scots Kat, I think you should ask for a bone density test, it is not questioning your GP's capacities but as I said, to have a reference to compare to later…(18 to 24 months between the first and the second).
You should also take a brand of calcium supplement which includes vitamin D because this vitamine facilitates the absorption of calcium. Maurice. |
Hello Maurice!
Maurice,
I hate to sound ignorant, but what exactly does jaw bone necrosis? It sounds awful - whatever it is!!! Thank you! Erin Quote:
