Very close call!

I called my son today and asked him if I'd missed anything while I've been away the past week.

He and his neighbor, Mike, travel to work together -- they are both employed at a coal mine. A few days ago they had just returned home when my son's house phone rang. It was Mike's wife, calling from the other end of the State (Utah). She had been on the phone with Mike when, all of a sudden, she could hear a racket and he had quit talking.

When my son ran across the street, he found Mike lying face down on the kitchen floor. Mike is diabetic and was aware that his sugar was dipping and had actually poured himself a glass of OJ, but before he could drink it he collapsed.

He was having some jerks, but he was coherent enough to tell my son what to do. My son (also named Mike) ran out to Mike's truck and got his lunch bucket. In it were small tubes of a toothpaste-like gel that Mike needed to bring him around. My Mike gave him 3 tubes before he was able to function. Then Mike was able to drink the orange juice.

I shudder to think what might have happened had my son not been immediately available.

You diabetics be sure and TAKE CARE OF YOURSELVES! Let your friends and associates know what to do in case of an emergency. My son would have had NO idea what to do if Mike hadn't been conscious and able to speak.

Oh My Goodness! How scary!! For both of them!!
I have had some LOW sugars but thank goodness my mom and dad were here....mom is diabetic and dad knows enough about it as well so I had no problems...I should take your advice and educate hubby more on it....even tech him how to take my sugars!!
Thanks Twink!!

Medic-alert bracelets

Mike should always wear a bracelet to let people know he's diabetic. This was a close call......
