I have a really good question!!

I just saw a commercial for Microsoft vista that tells you a person can record tv shows on their computer.

So I said "well I have a HP MEDIA CENER PC with Windows XP.

I googled "Record tv shows with XP and sure enough a whole bunch of links came up that sure enough indicated I can do this.

Here's the link:

I am totally confused. What remote are they talking about.

If I knew that I could record tv using my computer, believe me, I would have done this a long time ago.

can anyone explain this to me "s l o w l y".

thanks much. lol

Melody

P.S. in the meantime, I'm going to the help menu of my pc and see what comes up.

Requirements for Installing MSN Remote Record Service

The MSN Remote Record Service requires a broadband connection and that you run Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005. Most Media Center Edition 2004 PCs can be upgraded to Media Center Edition 2005 for a small shipping charge. Some older Media Center PCs may not support Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005. Consult your computer manufacturer and Upgrading to Windows XP Media Edition 2005 for information about upgrading.

Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005 needs to be configured to use the Guide before installing MSN Remote Record.

To use MSN Remote Record you must have a .NET Passport. If you use MSN Messenger, you already have a Passport. It's your sign-in e-mail address. If you're not sure if you have one, visit the Microsoft .NET Passport page for more information.

Finally, MSN Remote Record only works on Media Center PCs in the United States and Canada. The possibility exists for MSN Remote Record to be available for use in other countries eventually. (For good news about Media Center in other markets, see Availability of Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005 Will Expand to 20 Additional Markets Worldwide.)

Did we mention that the MSN Remote Record Service is free?]

Melody,

be prepared if you wish to use the recording function. for the following reasons.

1. time consuming for computer usage.

2. space on your computer. the amount of file space will be big for recorded shows. i do quite a bit of recording/media converting. it all takes up a lot of space . if you wanted to do it seriouslu id reccomens an external 500 gig or better hard drive specifically for recorsing media to. on one hour show can take up from 700mb ofor a simple avi to 1.5 gigabyte for the same show converted to a higher format such a wmv and audio video quality.

i currently have 1 terabyte of storage just for my movies and shows thats 1000 gigabytes.

my system has eight hard drives at 500 mb each so im ok on storage.

Uh, THANKS TO ALL OF YOU. One of you has 8 external hard drives, (I absolutely can't get over that fact.

After reading how much space I would need, I said "forget the whole thing, go over to your vcr and continue taping your tv shows".

Holy Cow!! I thought I was a big television recording person.

Roger, you got me beat by a mile.

I see I have MUCH to learn yet.

lol

Thanks so much for all the media center info.

Thanks Jo too!!

bye for now.
