Father with MG Please any info???
I just have a few questions for you all. My father was diagnosed with MG about 9 years ago. His symptoms were blurry vision, forgetfullness (even his own phone number), frequent falling, fatigue, his muscles would jerk and he would shake when he would go to take a drink so badly that he would have to use a straw. He would have spells to where he could not swallow and get choked. He would just sit in the chair shaking and be very short of breath. He went to several Dr. without any diagnosis (they thought he was crazy) then they thought he had MS but that was ruled out. So the neuro diagnosed him with MG. She said there was no real test for MG that says positive or negative and there is no cure. He does pretty well sometimes until it flares up again. He does not take any meds for this he just waits until the flare goes away. He does not like to go to Dr. we have to beg him to go. Does this sound like MG? Is there a cure? What do you guys use to help with the symptoms? Is there a test to diagnose MG? My father does not know how to use the internet. So I am on here for him. We live in a very small town where medical care is not the gratest and even if you travel very far to a Dr. it is still not the best any ideas??????? My father is 54 years old. Currently he has pneumonia and pleurisy and is in the hospital. He has not been able to hold a job in years due to his MG and is now drawing disability and I think he is very depressed. Any advice at this point would be good. Thank you all so much maybe I could teach my father to use this site because I think it would be very beneficial to him

There are several diagnostic techniques to confirm MG. For myself, I tested positive for the antibodies that are typical in standard MG - this was done through blood tests. However, there are other options that'll allow a neurologist to confirm diagnosis. http://www.neurologychannel.com/myas...iagnosis.shtml Depression is not uncommon with such a major change in life as a diagnosis like this can cause. I don't know that forgetfulness is a symptom of MG so much as an additional symptom of depression that he may be going through. I think you need to get him to a competent neurologist so that he can be properly diagnosed for whatever it is that he has and get treatment rolling. MG is controlled through various medications and potentially surgery to remove the thymus (which is linked to MG) if needed. Good luck with helping your father. Cheers, Brian. |

Hey there! It sounds like your dad needs to see a competant neuro pretty soon! Shortness of breath is nevera good thing!
With meds, he should be able to resume most of his normal activities and feel BETTER!!! If you have to, drive him and make sure he goes!!!! Hang in there!!! Erin:D |

Hope your father gets better. Here are my suggestions: 1) See a competent and compassionate Neurologist; you may have to take out-of-town trips and stay in a hotel. Suggest you ask for referrals here and post your location. In the U.S., review US News & World Report on hospital Neurology Dept. rankings. Search local MG chapters and look at the members of the Advisory Board as potential Neurologists. 2) take medications regularly based on Neurologist's orders 3) stay active on MG Forums; there are several Hope this helps.
