"Long way from home" - alligator in Australia

We don't have alligators in Australia. It's believed this one was brought in illegally as a tiny wee thing and it's grown too big for the people to deal with at home, so they've released it into the wild.

How weird is that. Why would people bring in a creature like that and expect to keep it at home? The mind boggles.

Camp ground alligator 'probably a pet'

Police were called to the Noonameena scout camp in Pambula, on the Far South Coast, about 5pm yesterday after reports a crocodile was walking around the yard.

When police arrived, they found a 1.5-metre reptile being held down by a group of people using a volleyball net.
:D

Although authorities initially believed the animal was a saltwater crocodile, it was later found to be an alligator, Mr Dengate said.

There was no way the alligator - which is native to Florida, in the US - could have made its own way to Pambula, Mr Dengate said.
John Dengate is our National Parks and Wildlife Service spokesperson btw.

I actually saw an interview with the captors on the tellie earlier and the guy basically said that all the people just did what they'd seen Steve Irwin do on tv and one man jumped on his/her back and the others helped secure the alligator and then another tied the snout. Unreal.

Aw, that poor baby! yes and why in the world would folks think it was cool to get one as a baby and keep it.

I don't understand why some one would want an alligator as a pet either. Thank you for sharing.
