drive cleaner...right!!!

Something keeps showing up on my computer about "cleaning out all adult
sites you have visited". Supposedly, they can install cookies in my computer
and track sites I've visited. A pretty neat trick, since I don't visit any adult
sites!! To top it off, I couldn't get rid of the "darn" ad! I kept clicking
it off and it would show up again! Oh, and check this out: supposedly, I
have visited 948 adult sites!!! Who are these idiots and where do they
come up with this BS?!?!

Sorry for the rant, but I'm just so disgusted with these people!

Curious 09-11-2006 11:51 AM

what gall! 948? they know dern well you hit 1000 last week! :p

our business computer got hit with something like that after one of the employees went to a reverse directy type of site. ( had written down a phone number on the message pad but no name ) ( plus that computer tracks all web sites it goes to...so it wasn't from going to a naughty site)

we lucked out that running adaware caught it and removed it.

is it a pop up while you are online braindrain? if so, clean out your cookies...toss the choccy ones my way..clear out the temp folders and run whatever program you use to get rid of this junk...adaware...spybot...
add the url of the pop up web site to your blocked list of sites if you are using IE.

hope this helps. :)

Now I get it!

Have you been monkeying around with my computer??:p It's not a popup,
it's the kind that asks you if you want to open the file or save it to your
computer. It wouldn't let me cancel, either. It took me several tries
before I could get it off of my screen. Is this the same as spyware?
Or is that something else altogether?

You can have the choccy cookies (except for the chocolate chip
cookies-they're mine!:D )

Curious 09-11-2006 12:10 PM

it sounds like it. have you run any of the spyware detection programs?

Braindrain 09-11-2006 12:16 PM

Not yet, because I wasn't sure if I needed to or not. I thought I should
check here first. Thanks!

Curious 09-11-2006 12:35 PM

good luck on getting rid of it. and really....i swear i haven't messed with your computer.

Curious, I'm telling you for the last time: keep your paws off my switches!:p
(You're getting chocolate all over the keys!;) :D )

I tried one of those programs, and it wiped out things I wanted. It was called
Win something. Boy it was Trouble! Turns out it is spyware. I finally got rid of it I think by searcing for it in Find and deleted everything with that name in it. It gets into your registry. Now I use only AdAware and Adsubtract to block the pop-ps. Tattoo

Braindrain 09-24-2006 09:42 AM

Tattoo, that sounds like one of the ones that's been showing up here.
I think it's called WinFix something-or-other.

Oh, and I think I figured out what these "adult sites" are about. I'm
pretty sure it has to do with these pop-ups I'm getting. You know,
the kind about dating services, or "sexy singles". Of course,
since I'm not clicking on the ads, except to click them off of my screen,
I don't see how I can be considered "visiting" the sites.

Would turning my popup blocker to 100% get rid of these ads? They're
beyond annoying! And another thing: I just saw 2 icons on my screen
about downloading Cingular ringtones. I have a Cingular phone, but I
don't know where these icons came from, since I wasn't even at the
site!

The other issue is that I am the administrator for another board. The
smileys are in a popup screen. If I turn my popup blocker to 100%,
would it block the smiley popup? Or would the popup still work because
I'm the admin? See, that's the problem: I'm trying to get rid of popups
that cause trouble, but there are other popups that don't cause any
problems, that will be blocked if I do this.

Any suggestions/ideas?

If you are using the Firefox or Netscape browsers you can turn pop ups 100% and it will show a notice at the top of a screen if you want to allow that one to show.

both of those browsers are free to download
www.mozzilla.com or www.netscape.com
