neck brace

Can anyone reccomend a neck brace for my friend who has lost all motor function except for speech and swallowing. She has tried the Philadelphia and the HeadMaster and they do not work well for her.

also, does anyone know any ways to prevent flection and extension? she is getting a wheelchair with a headrest this week.

thank you.

Hi Twigs,
Maybe someone will respond who has a better idea...but have you checked out an MDA clinic to see if they could custom fit something..
Gary used a clinic called the Brace Place..which was part of the MDA clinic for ALS here in town..they custom fit him with leg braces and hand splints..
But due to his trache did not really pursue the neck brace for long...he tried the headmaster as well before the trache ..and it did not work for him either..Lisa

Hey

I wear a neck brace alot of the time - it is a solid cervical collar called a Miami J brace - I have no ability to hold my head so it has worked very well, I also have an Otto Bock head rest which wraps around my head - but brace still needed for car/ bus etc...

I have been in it a year and it is far superior to either the Philly or the headmaster. I also have a semi rigid one but it's not much use!

hope this helps!

forgot to add - tilt and recline function on wheelchair with wrap around head rest makes a HUGE difference......rxxx
