Question about Spirutein (Spirulina).

Hi All.

I did a search on this forum about this product and all I could find were threads relating to the Vit B-12 that is in spirulina.

I'm not interested in the B-12 in this product because my B-12 is taken care of.

What I want is a good source of protein that is easy, quick and this seemed like a good thing.

Years ago, (when my hubby was on the Fentanyl patch), I remember his pain managemen doctor telling him "Take Spirulina", "It will give you energy".

Alan did this for a while, but then got off the patch, lost 100 lbs, ate his chicken, (not too much fish), and we did not see the need to get anymore spirutein.

So now that we are basically doing the vegetarian thing. (Alan will not go near fish), I do have it on occasion, well, I try to find alternate sources of protein.

So bascially, if we don' want to eat too much soy (and we get PLENTY of fiber), because I grow my own sprouts and we do the veggie thing, and we have the Omega 3 thing going on because we take Fish capsules, the only thing I really want to increase is our protein.

I get enough, but I don't think Alan does.

So I figured I would get some spirutein into him.

Now it seems that there are choices. You can buy spirulina tablets, capsules, or in powder.

The capsules, (to me), seem the easiest way to take this.

Or we can go to GNC and buy the powder and put it into his beverage.

Do any of you take this?

I'd love to hear any comments if you think this product can be a good alternative source of protein.

As he (and me), get older, I have read about the importance of muscle mass and the loss of muscle mass, and the NEED for protein.

Any and all advice would be welcome.

I tried to do a search on the internet but all I got was sites that sell Spirulina and Spirutein and that it's a good source of protein.

I guess I just want more info and to find out if the powder is better than the tablets??? Oh I just called up Nature Plus and they are sending us a free sample.

They also have a product called Spirutein-Whey for people on low-carb, low glycemic diets. That sounded GOOD FOR ME!!! lol

Here's the link to that particular item:
http://www.luckyvitamin.com/item/itemKey/65551

It DOES have a lot of ingredients including Guar Gum, and other stuff.

Thanks much

Melody

spirulina is an algae...

The B12 in it is marginal if anything. B12 can only come from animals, not plants.

SpiruTein is a protein soy supplement. They now make many bars/wafers/ shakes. It is unclear to me if SpiruTein products contain spirulina. Their website is a bit unclear about that.
How much spirulina is in each product, etc?

Basically SpiruTein is quality company, so if you want to do
them, I don't see any problems, for you. They make whey products now too.

Ah, that's good then. I'm taking a walk to 86th street. They have a GNC that might have the small packets.

What about the spirulina tablets? do you think this is BETTER than the shakes? Because the tablet is supposed to be all spirulina?

One would think that if all you want is spirulina then why not just take the supplement.

Going to look into this.

Thanks much Mrs. D.

Question about Spirutein (Spirulina).

The Vitamin Shoppe has a large assortment of the Spiru-tein powdered shake flavors, possibly more than GNC will. They also have a vegetable supplement powder and a superfruit powder - both containing protein and both I believe are by Nature's Plus as well. Don't quote me on those two though!

I will be sampling Spiru-tein as soon as I get the sample in the mail, but everyone I've heard from loves the taste of it. If you go to Nature's Plus website, there should be a link for coupons where you can get your free sample too - the code for the sample is in the Energy Times, just google "Spiru-tein Energy Times code" and you should be able to find it (this thread won't let me post a link to it, sorry!) I ordered the cookies and cream flavor, so I will post back on here once I try it.

The Vitamin Shoppe should also carry the Spiru-tein sample pack, that comes with several of their popular favors and a mixing bottle. Just an FYI :)
