Irregular periods with neuropathy?
 

Hi Everyone:

I'm new to this forum and have recently been diagnosed with peripheal neuropathy. It's most likely the result of my TOS (Thoracic Outlet Syndrome).

My dr. prescribed neurotin, and it is giving some relief. My question is : 'Is it common to have irregular and painful periods with peripheal neuoropathy. I used to be fairly regular, but now I'm highly irregular and have very painful periods. The pain is primarily in my pelvis and hips.'

I'm just wondering if this is normal for people with this disorder.

high dose long term opiates for pain?

Long term use of opiates interferes with the hypothalamic axis in the brain and can mess up hormones.

I'd get checked out by a GYN doctor. You may have some hormone problem, or endometriosis going on.

PCOS will also mess up periods.

I'm taking Neurotin, short term dose of MethylPrednisolone, and Hydrocodone for pain.

I guess I'll call my GYN and make an appt. It gets tiresome going to all these different doctors.

I too have a lot of pain with periods and even pelvic pain without periods. I did have stage 1 endometriosis.

Might want to ask doc if you can see a PT for pelvic dysfunction. Mine is caused by muscle spasm's in the pelvic region with the Levator ani muscles. I thought it was maybe pain from a gyn condition like ovarian pain but turned out to be muscle related.

Mrsd is right you might also want to be evaluated for PCOS for endometiosis.

My hormones are out of whack because of perimenopause and my periods are heavier because of hypothyroidism. AS you near your period you body starts to produce prostglandgins which in excess can magnify pain. Atleast it does in my case.

I have a long history with periods... It got worser and worser and about 8 years ago I went to my doctor and asked her what to do. She advised me to have a Mirena IUD, a very small IUD that was best tolerated by women. 'Most' women don't feel a thing when it is placed, I had a fainting fit, doctor brought me home, I stayed at the couch for a few days, not with just stomach pains but with real contraction woes, I had very heavy stomach pains for one year and after that year I said: Take it out please!! A few years I used nothing and I had very painful periods with fainting fits and woes (I had a child so I can compare...), even my ovulation was very painfull. Then I went to my (new) doctor and said: I don't leave the office until you give me a letter for the hospital to take 'all' out :mad: Well, she said, I want to try just one thing; the contraceptive injection; Depo Provera. The best invention since the washing machine!! I just had one or two small periods and now I am I think 3 years free of all pain, suffering and all kind of stuff. I never want something else and I hope it will always stay like this!

Flying duth woman: what do you mean when you say that Depo Provera injection ended all pain? DO you mean all pain from the period or neuropathic pain?

I have been considering an injection for contraception, because i think contaceptive pills could worsen my neuropathy. Is this Depo Provera injection suitable for contraception for people with neuropathy?


Sunny dee: I too have issues with irregular periods and i have neuropathy. I was diagnosed with PCOS some years ago, but refused to take the regular contraceptive pills treatment. I am trying a form of inositol, called d chiro inositol that is giving incredible results for people with PCOS. I has given me very good results so far. My periods have regulated and hormonal acne has almost completely dissapeared. I have noticed some improvement with neuropathy. I have more good days than but days, but then i am also taking drugs (lyrica and elavil) so i don't know if pain relief is from the drugs or from d chiro inositol.

Some people think neuropathy is related to or affected by insulin resistance. Women with PCOS have insulin resistance. D chiro inositol surely helps with that. You can find information about it and scientific studies.

I don't know if this doesn't make sense; I am having this injection for a couple of years and I just have been diagnosed for a few weeks. I mean that the Depo Provera stops all periods, so also the pain that belongs to the periods and because it stops all, it also stops the evoluation. I must say that I don't know if this would feel well when I still have a childwish; I don't have it at all so I don't care if I perhaps will become infertile. I don't think that will happen often, but I can imagine that when you want to have children one day, it won't feel natural that your periods will stop 100%.
Unfortunately, it doesn't stop all neuropathic pain, in that case I would have participations in Depo Provera :D
