Honesty in Prayer

the Daily Bread devotional from RBC today features one of my favorite authors, Philip Yancey. He just always seems to manage to speak a language that I clearly understand :) and I really needed to hear this message today :o

The Bible teaches us to pray with blistering honesty.

God wants us to come to Him with our complaints. If we march through life pretending to smile while inside we bleed, we dishonor the relationship. — Philip Yancey

yes -create in me a pure heart

dear chemar,
the prayers are different -thanking God - praising God & petitioning God/praying for others.
then there's conversing with God...
I have to talk to God because he IS REAL...and I live alone, God is a great listener!

God hears me and I must tell him, that I need HIM,and I feel crappy. so he can lift me up, usually makes me laugh, truly God has an awesome sense of love!
and if I pray not from my heart , God would know,
so if youu lie when you pray, -whatts the point? :holysheep:

I love this message, and it is so true. I have felt Him tend to me more when in pain, than in joy. And He does, and it is awesome!! :)

Chemar,
What a good point. I try so hard to put on a happy face and not let people know if I'm feeling badly. I am more honest in this forum than I am in real life. As I think about it, I think I am dishonest with God by not praying for my needs. I pray for the needs of others. But this really hit home.
Thank you for this!

I like this thread. Even the title. I don't think it's possible to be dishonest to God. The language which comes from our lips is not His language. It's our language, to use to our best in able to communicate with each other. God hears the language of our soul. When we pray, He wants us to pray aloud, even when we're alone. But it's not because He needs to hear our words. It's because He wants us to hear them for ourselves. He wants us to hear what we are thinking, and what we are praying. How many times have we thought something, and it seemed perfectly reasonable, but when we said it aloud, even to ourselves, it simply became more real to us. But not to Him. It was real to Him before we even thought it.

Thanks, Chemar...

Just let us remember to heed our own words, as well as hearing them. :)

good point Idealist

the Daily Bread today was a "follow up" for me on this as it reminded me about BELIEVING that He IS able......and coming to Him with a heart filled with faith!
