my computer is running slow and keeps freezing up on me

my mouse and my cursor are not in sync. I have run a virus scan and I have 8 viruses on my computer. The virus program cannot remove them. Is there something else I can do about this problem? Is it even the viruses that are causing all the problems?Any help would be appreciated.
Thx

My daughter & I just went thru this same problem.

my puter /hardrive finally crashed so I had to get a new one and start fresh.
daughters is still functioning she reinstalled win XP for now.
I had reinstalled it on mine and was good for a week or 2 but then constant blue sceen every time. I think I messed up when I deleted some of those bad /virus files- prob why I had a total crash later.

I ordered some linux products from Amazon - Ubuntu & Kubuntu {free from the website {Ubuntu & Kubuntu } or you can get them from Amazon.com {9.95} you can run them from the DVD to try them out - or install them.
plus you can do it as a dual boot system and still have your windows for certain programs.

right now they don't "see" my wireless connection, so I'm using windows for online til I get that figured out.
but if you have a direct modem connection or cable network they will probably work fine.
Linux is much less susceptible to hackers and viruses. AND pretty much FREE- because it's open source.

you can also try downloading - stinger - a free virus product
I read that sometimes one product will not catch all viruses so a variety is needed to keeep a clean system.
the free trial of bit defender is what finally removed the ones I had.
netsky A B
bugbear
some that i can't remember.

there is stand alone removers for specific viruses on the AV websites- bit defender website and pcillin? and mcafee site- i think too. explore on those.

do you run spyware /adware too?
spybot is a good one- it found more than spydoctor on my machine

I suggest
clean up hardrive
go thru and delete/remove any old programs that you don't use.
defrag hardrive if needed
then do full scans with spyware/adware scanners & a couple of AntiV scanners.

You might think about getting Spyware software. Spyware can get usually get rid of those things that your virus software cannot.

If you get Spyware I can bet you will be suprised at the amount of things it finds, probably more than your virus scan did.

I forgot to mention that Spyware can remove the items that the virus ware can't.

you could try this online scanner. it's free and very good:

and yes, viruses mess with system files and can cause the problem you're having.

once you clean the virus sucessfully, you should run system file checker.

here's a pictorial of the program and how to run it:

Hi there. I had that and didn't know that my virus scan was set to "report only" the virus found.

Can you make sure that the setting for the virus scan is set to "repair or fix"?

For anything my AV can"t handle I use Trend Micro housecall online.

Been using it for several years and it works like a charm.

cara - did you have any luck finding a Anti Virus product that can clean your system?

Harryinny 10-05-2006 06:38 AM

Use a product called AVG Its Free and will help. Also use a free program called AdawareSE for spyware. Then theres also spysweeper.

This always happens to folks who dont take Security seriousely. I dont mean to sound like no one does, But just haveing an antivirus software program isnt enough. You NEED to use windows update EVERY week, or have it set to Auto update every week, You also NEED a firewall, A good one is zonealarm. Run it 24/7. Internet explorer is full of security holes, it would be a good idea to try a browser called Mozilla Firefox. It also lets you Import your Internet Explorer Favorites.

I work on ALOT of computers, and this is a common problem. Its really noones fault, But Its just a lack of security on the owners part most of the time. Always keep your Anti virus softwares Definitions up to date weekly.

For the record, Nortons is a waste of money, along with Mcafee. Use AVG 7.0 and Zonelabs Zonealarm for your firewall. Use AdawareSE for spyware and also use Spysweeper.

Sorry for the long post, But i hate to see people go through this when its so avoidable. Remember, Treat the internet like EVERYONE is out to get you. Because quite frankly, Just visiting a site or just clicking on a link(on a site, in a AOL IM or Yahoo IM will give you spyware or viruses).

If anyone needs some links i could possibly dig them up. Just PM me and ill try to find them again.

CleanUPp 4.0 works amazinly well, too.... However, if you have a lot of favorite links you like to visit just by going to the "favorites" list, you may want to have a physical copy somewhere..... My list dissapears every few days.

Another free download

Hi everyone:

Spybot Search and Destroy is excellent too. Free download. Does a good job and used by many. I have never had a problem with it.
