Meat stuck in throat

My husband was so proud of himself night before last when he brought home two ribeye steaks. We put them on the grill although it was 17 degrees outside.I made us both a baked potato and veggie. I set the table, even lighting a candle. It was so delicious, cooked just riight.
Around my third bite, when I swallowed the piece of steak, it didn't go very far. My first instinct was to get water and try to wash it down. When I took a drink, it came right back out my nose and mouth because it couldn't get through the meat. I was panicked but tried to stay calm. I thought to myself
Is this how I'm going to die. My husband tried the Himlik manuver, but nothing happened. I tried to swallow numerous times and it would just make a funny noise from my throat. My husband called 911 and here they came. The paramedics loaded me up and headed for the hospital, which is about 25 minutes away. It is a bumpy ride as a lot of it is on dirt roads. We were very close to the hospital when we hit a good bump and it went down.I swallowed that bite. I started to talk again and was so happy. They went ahead and took me in to make sure I could drink water. I did and I got to go home.
My husband said " Never a dull moment".

I wasn't yet DXed and enjoying a hot pastrami sandwich at a restaurant. It had fat running through it and stuck together in long ratty pieces, I couldn't swallow so I drank some Coke to wash it down. Ha. Came right out my nose. Bubbly coke hurts!!! I pulled the pastrami out and lived obviously. DH and kids thought me hilarious. A football shaped fat pill is hard to swallow now. Water can choke me if I'm not careful.

Hey Jo55, I was scared it would move and completely block my air way. It was down pretty far.

I have trouble swallowing large pills so I cut a tablet in half.

The jagged first half was hard to swallow so I had a bit of anxiety with the next half. I inhaled it. I kept coughing and could not breath. Coughed so hard I began to pee. Ran to the toilet and sat there, peeing and coughing. Finally it burst out.

Scared the heck out of me.

So, you could breathe, just not swallow?

i know how you felt! I was eating some Mexican food a couple of months after my spinal fusion and I took a tiny bite of soft tender chicken and it became hung and I went wild, completely forgetting to use the universal sign of choking and although I knew CPR I was alone with my 17 y/o son and he was watching me like it was a TV show, and I was running around in circles, gagging, turning blue I imagine and I knew I was going to die that day, and as I began to slowly slide down the wall I had tried to hit myself against but was too weak from surgery, and all of a sudden he got a terrified look in his eyes and he came up behind me and put his arms around my waist and began to squeeze, and it did not work the first 2 times and final time he jerked me off the floor and lifted me when he jerked and it flew out and I could not bring myself to eat meat for 2 years, only oatmeal! I am still afraid of meat and don't know if I can ever lose that fear? I guess you can say he saved my life!
I continue to have swallowing problems and I know its tied up with the spinal cord damage!

Gosh, Doodle Bug 7....I'm so glad you're OK. That has got to be the scariest feeling....and I'm glad you weren't home alone. I take teeny, tiny bites of food because for a while there I was having swallowing difficulties and was so scared of choking. Sometimes the tinest sip of water seems to choke me...or go down the wrong way. It's definitely scary. Glad you're OK!

I can only imagine how scared you must have been.

this is so not funny!!!!

I'm glad you made it and believe me, I'll cut my food into smaller pieces.

I don't eat red meat, but when I did, I remember cutting up the steak and jamming it into my mouth.

Never would have thought a piece would get stuck.

Jeez.

Glad you are okay.
