Any Vegetarian's in the house?

Just curious, are there any Vegetarian's in the house?

I border on Vegetarianism. But every once in a while I like a piece of animal...but I'm getting more and more cautious as there are so many scary aspects about the meat we buy. What it's fed, how its fed, what's feeding on it..... Flesh foods are very dense and are a lot of work for our bodies to break down. Everything points to a healthier way to get your protien....nuts, seeds, soy product, whey protien (derived from cow's milk I would guess) A case of the apple never falling far from the tree.

Why do you ask?

situational vegetarian

eating at home: mostly vegetarian
eating out or at others' homes: anything but red meat

Michael Pollan's book The Omnivore's Dilemma is a wonderfully written investigation of some of the choices we all must make when we eat: where our food comes from, what is the nourishment and cultural factors (and the metaphors) incorporated within our diet.

I'm curious because of all the reading I've done about disease/inflammation and diet.

It seems, at least in the US, we have a very meat based diet and over the millenia, humans ate a larger proportion of roots and vegetables than meat. The last time I tried changing my diet I basically starved myself because I didn't pursue alternatives to meat, I just ate way less. I think I may try a primarily vegetarian diet with the addition of fish and maybe chicken.

I'm frustrated with the constant offering of medication from the doctor and lack of relief and thought I might be better served focusing on diet and exercise.

Here is a vegetarian who never tasted ham in her life! By the way there is much more than fiber in vegetarian food!:)
Just this morning I posted on a different thread about how my low fat, low calorie vegetarian diet is making me feel better.

Meat

Hi RD42,
I have always been a meat eater. The only exception was as a child during the second world war, when in the UK , food was rationed and you got a ounce or 2 of bacon and other meats. per week. Since childhood, I have eaten all types of red meat, chicken, and fish, particularly plaice and scampi.

This website gives nutritional data that is just excellent.

It has an inflammatory index for those interested.

And the new glycemic LOAD (not glycemic index) data:

This might help you make good choices:

red meat and green leafies for me

and eggs, lots of eggs
Contrary to all conventional wisdom but what my body wants.

Back in the archives is a long thread on diet and blood type. There is a rather logical hypothesis that our dietary needs are linked to our blood type because evolution selected for both in parallel. Mass migration isolated groups such that those who ended up in the far north with limited plant foods evolved in favor of meat, those who developed agriculture favored grains, raising cattle selected for dairy, etc.

Are you going to eat that? :D

I Believe that red meats are bad for us. I used to LOVE a steak on the grill. Black n Blue (burnt on the outside, rare on the inside)...It's been years but once in awhile I will give into temptation and have a few bites. It ALWAYS makes me feel sick now. Then tried all organic which tasted Fantastic but still made me feel ill. So now it's Organic everything with Wild Salmon, eggs, & the occasional chicken. My health has improved Dramatically. More energie, less pain...

My mom is living with me now & her diet was mostly take-out the past 6 years. She has Alzheimer's/Schizophrenia/Dementia...The first thing was to change her diet. So far her blood sugar & pressure has normalized. The Dr's put her on Blood pressure meds because of side effects of other meds which stink! She has less constipation, less pain, but she is so messed up mentally it's hard to tell if the change in diet can help anymore..We will see.
