WSJ: Drug Studies Faked

Shameful to put it mildly. I know some of these drugs are ones that are prescribed for us so I wanted to share the info. Yikes indeed!

http://blogs.wsj.com/health/2009/03/...cated-studies/

"We’ve followed plenty of controversies around drug trials, from ghostwriting to keeping quiet about unflattering results. But the latest news is particularly eye-popping: A prominent Massachusetts anesthesiologist allegedly fabricated 21 medical studies involving major drugs. Yikes.

Baystate Medical Center in Springfield, Mass., has asked several anesthesiology journals to retract the studies, which appeared between 1996 and 2008, the WSJ reports. The hospital says its former chief of acute pain, Scott S. Reuben, faked data used in the studies.

Some of the studies reported favorable results from use of Pfizer’s Bextra and Merck’s Vioxx, both painkillers that have since been pulled from the market. Others offered good news about Pfizer’s pain drugs Lyrica and Celebrex and Wyeth’s antidepressant Effexor XR. Doctors said Reuben’s work was particularly influential in pain treatment and that they were shocked by the news."

I'm wondering how long it will take before the same kind of info comes out on some of the companies and Docs making our DMDs for MS??

I am sick to my stomach..:(

Just another reason I tend to be distrustful of the medical profession. I wasn't so cynical until I got this debilitating disease and started dealing with doctors and medications/pharmaceuticals more. It is truly sickening.

I know......sometimes I think the DMD's do more harm than good.

I believe it all boils down to the mighty dollar. Honestly, I don't think they want to find a cure for anything. It would take away too much money from their pockets.

Wow. Thanks, Kao, that is truly disturbing.

I'll be waiting to see this clown on CourtTV.

I sometimes wonder if whatever it is that I'm injecting every day (Copaxone) might just be nothing more than saline solution or something that doesnt do anything helpful for the MS.

I know it's ruining my skin near the injection sites.

yet, I'm still doing the daily stab (well, not really daily stabs....I forget sometimes) Hopefully it's helping, but I'll probably never know if it's really helping.

And that's why we keep injecting ( and they, meaning the drug companies, know this) because we truly don't know how much worse we'd be without them. Not to mention, it helps ,IMO, if we believe that what we are doing is helping/working.

Back to the original post, this sickens me also that this happened. Also,I think it's terrible that it took this long to come out.

I don`t know how many remember but the tobacco companies got doctors to say tobacco wasn`t harmful, why should this be a surprise? A source of income and some put income ahead of ethics.
