Mrsd & kitt

I'm hollaring out to Mrsd and Kitt but if anyone else can chime in please do...

Mrsd do you (or anyone else) know if CoQ10 can have gastro side effect? or does it not mesh well with other supplements? Been having some gastro issues for the last couple of months and the only "new" thing I have been eating or taking is the CoQ10.

Kitt (being a CMTer) I was wondering if you have read or found any info or experienced muscle spasms in the front of your throat? I have had a few nasty and quick (thank goodness) spasms on the right side of my throat.

Hi lynxgal. Here is a site from the Mayo Clinic on CoQ10. http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/coe...nt-coenzymeq10

Your body also makes CoQ10. I believe you would want to know if you are low in it. They are doing trials on it for people with CMT.

This information is for the general public. I thought the part about taking herbs/supplements at the same time might be of interest to you. Some of the rest is that it may lower blood sugar levels. Caution is advised in patients with diabetes or hypoglycemia and in those taking drugs, herbs or supplements that affect blood sugar.

Also can cause nausea, vomiting, stomach upset, heartburn, diarrhea, loss of appetite, skin itching, rash, insomnia, headache, dizziness, fatigue, flu like symptoms, light sensitivity of the eyes, etc.

I have not experienced any muscle spasms in my throat as a CMTer. I do not know if others have or not.

I hope this helps a little. I will try and see if I can find anything concerning the muscle spasms in the throat for CMTers. Can you further explain what you mean by these spasms. Take care.

by the "front" you mean the front of the neck? Where the voice box is?

Or you mean the back of the tongue? There is a nasty throat virus going around,
which I managed to pick up. It causes laryngitis and sore throat.

Any throat spasms should be checked out by a doctor.
Do you take an ACE inhibitor for blood pressure?
This family of drugs can cause swelling of the throat suddenly.

This is a monograph for CoQ-10:
http://www.umm.edu/altmed/articles/c...q10-000295.htm

Sometimes there can be throat irritation from reflux you may do in the night, and this can irritate the throat.

Is your CoQ-10 a softgel? That is the type you should be using, not a dry powder capsule. Less is absorbed from a dry powder capsule form.

I can't address the possible connection to CMT. Your doctor will have to help with that.

When using a new drug or supplement you think is causing something negative, discontinue it for at least a week and then reintroduce. If the symptom goes away and returns then that will show you more. A day or two is typically not enough of a test.

Quick reply...I have to run but thank you for the responses. Will read links later today.

spasms is right side down along the front of my throad. Almost feels like the right back side of the tongue is involved. they are very quick....Maybe 5 seconds? Almost like 1/2 a choke? sorry hard to explain.

I'm on no meds regularly. No high bp or sugar problems.

coq10 is powder form... thanks for the info will discontinue for awhile.

gotta run thanks again.

Spasms in the muscles of the neck are alot different that
"throat" spasms.

Periodic spasms in a skeletal muscle can be a dystonia.
There is one called torticollis, which will turn the head in one
direction and resist relaxing. For a long time it was not treatable, but now neurologists use Botox for it.

Let us know what you find out!

Aha!

I think I have figured out how to explain this sensation....

The throat spasms feels like a gag reflex x 10 and only on the right side. Tongue is definately involved. Then outside part of right side of my neck will hurt at the same time. I feel the muscles tensing right before it hits.

Make sense? Good description?

MRSD...do you know how long it takes for the coq10 to get out of your system?

CoQ-10 is always in your system. Your liver makes it too.

I would get checked out for that spasm by a ENT doctor
(ears/nose/throat)
I don't think this has anything to do with CoQ-10.

I have never heard of CoQ-10 causing muscle spasms.

Something is triggering you, either an irritation from reflux from the stomach, an infectious agent in the throat, or something happening neurologically.

I hope this is self-limiting and goes away for you soon.

i would be thinking neuro.....anything else going on that is one sided?

mrsD 03-22-2009 03:43 PM

I don't want to say the C-word....BUT....

it is a possibility.
There could be a tumor on the parathyroids or thyroid or a goiter that is pressing on a nerve. I had a one sided goiter that pressed on my laryngeal nerve, and changed my voice, for example.

Or you could have a swollen gland on one side due to infection, or even a <shudder> lymphoma.

That is why I think an examination is necessary.

When evaluating a side effect from a drug or supplement one needs to know that those do not cluster like that in one special area. Reactions would be more global.

Catching a serious thing in the throat early is the best prognosis if something dire is happening.

Almost (about 75%) of my symptoms have started out right sided.

I have an appointment with the CMT neurologist in a week and a half. I'm not keen on calling my current neuro with this sx. Last time I called with a new sx (sounds like TN based on my research - oh right sided as well) they said nothing we can do about it. If it continues call your GP. Bah! Not very helpful I'd say.
