Funny Sayings

Sally started a thread here with the phrase "And I'm still older than dirt..". I've heard that saying before....but just how old is dirt?

My Dad used to say "he's tighter than D!ck's hatband" about someone who was stingy with money. He also used to say "the more you complain the longer God lets you live." :D

My Mom used to say "good news is still puttin' on his shoes while bad news is halfway there".....talking about how bad news travels fast.

What are some funny sayings you remember from your childhood or even use now?

Hi Kitty,

Great thread - thanks for starting - this should be a lot of fun!!

One of the sayings that my family uses is "It's black over Bill's Mothers"! They always say it when it is about to rain and it always makes me wonder who Bill actually is lol.

One of my friends from school and I were talking the other day and she was asking how I was getting on. I said that I was frustrated with having to go to the hospital for PT all the time and that it is really painful and she said one of the sayings her family uses when they have to go and see a doctor and don't want to is "An Apple a Day, keeps the Doctor away, but if the doctors cute, screw the fruit"! It really made me laugh - it's just a real shame that my doctors aren't cute lol!

I'm looking forward to seeing other peoples responses - you have some great sayings!!

If my mother got really upset, and said nasty things to someone, she would say she "laid her out in Lavender." I always thought that if you covered someone in sweet flowers, it was supposed to be a compliement.

I also love "let sleeping dogs lay."

My DD has little patience with stupid people and I always said to her..."Don't expect too much from those to whom God gave so little".
I think I heard that from my Mother.

I like the stupid sayings too, like, I would ask my Dad where he was going and He'd say.."Down to Mike's below Jake's, where they make sweet Ginger cakes"..:D When I was little I always wanted to go with him to get sweet ginger cakes...LOL!

I just thought of another one. Whenever we'd ask what time it was my Dad would always say "a hair past a freckle eastern elbow time". :p

from my childhood: Don't step on a crack or you'll break your mother's back.

I remember when my brother's would get their hair cut *usually a butch way back when* and they'd come home and my Dad would say "Iv'e seen a better head on a nickle beer* My Mother would give him a dirty look each time. I still smile when I think of that.

Ali~ that was priceless!!! Yeah, who needs fruit!!!!

Of course I have a few of my own, a lot of them we simply call southernisms.

Eat Grits.
Kiss my grits.

I knew a guy once that, whenever he spoke with his mom on the phone, they'd both complain about what a skinflint his dad was.

The guy would say, "Mom, he's so tight that he makes a penny scream."
