colloid cyst..new member with questions

Hi I am a new member, I joined because my daughter 24 collapsed in A&E dep. two weeks ago. she had suffered from headache for more than 18 months, was diagnosed as migrine, on that day the pain was severe, she ended up in the A&E but collapsed two hours after admition. she went un concoius for 50 mintues ( until operated on) according to the records, was taken to a scan, that showed a colloid syst blocking the csf flow, then had an external tubing installed to relief the pressure. Her brain has suffered damage, the neuro surgents can not tell how much damage from the scan, she has had a shunt now but still quit disabled. Can anybody help me of similar case where the patient has recovered and what to expect.
I am sorry I do not know how to start a new thread.

I moved your post for you.

If you click on the main forum name, like Colloid Cyst ( it will be right above the NT toolbar and is underlined), that will bring you to a forums main page. There is a button to the left that says New Thread. Just click that and start a new thread.

Let me know if I can be of any help navagating the forum.

I also am not that familiar with threads etc..but will give it a try. From my personal experience with a cc of the third ventricle I will give you what I went through. First of all I was not unconscious.I chose major surgery to remove the tumor rather than a shunt. After the surgery I forgot both long term and short term memories. I set up a regiment of walking in the local school to follow the straight line in the linoleum. I had much difficulty in doing this at first, but didn't give up. After what seemed an eternity things started to improve, then I started to go back and reread my professional texts. At his juncture I am post 3 1/2 years. Things have improved. The bottom line IT WILL TAKE TIME.DON'T GIVE UP. Tom

Thank you Tom, we are still pretty much in the same position after the 5th week of our duaghter collapse, but as you wrote, every body tell us that it is a long road, only we do not know where it will lead us. I hope you make full recovery.

Hi, Salam! :) I am not REAL familiar with colloid cysts, but I did have a cousin who suffered through much the same thing: a blockage of CSF fluid, and he had to have a shunt, too. When he was younger, he was pretty disabled. It took years of therapy and relearning, but he is now functional again. However, the damage which was inflicted is still evident, in a general-personality way, and the way he hunches. It takes a lot of love and support, and a lot of hair-tearing too, to get back to a semblance of normality. But it CAN happen. Good luck to you and to your daughter! :grouphug:

help with colloid cyst recovery

hey guys im a newbie looking for some support. On monday my wife had a colloid cyst removed from her brain. im just wondering how the recovery goes? im told her chances are real good?
I find it annoying,as she ahd been at local gp's and hospitals several times over the past 3 years about her blinding headaches, and a scan was not until she lost conciousness in my local A+E.
We have two kids, one 10 wks old,and im just wondering how we are gonna deal with it all when she leaves hospital.
all help and encouragement appreciated!

Hi, I hope this note finds your wife doing great....
I am writing to you because I had cc removal (emergency) surgury on May 14 of this year and just wondered if 2 months post op is as good as it gets in the recovery process....I am told that I am "better" as the cyst was removed - - however, I just don't feel like the same person....I am still forgetting alot and I hate to go out and see people and my thoughts are STILL jumbled...what was your wifes' recovery like?
Thank you so much

Hopeful.......in IL

Hi, I am a relative newbie aswell, but received surgery to remove my colloid cyst nearly two years ago at Addenbrooke's Hospital, Cambridge, UK. To begin with I had a major memory defecit, which meant I couldn't even recognise close family members, that slowly improved however and now, even though I haven't returned to work yet, I am absolutely desperate to do so and looking forward to a long and successful, though briefly interupted, career. I have done a lot of reading since my operation and am convinced that in most cases a Colloid Cyst is something we can all recover from. With patience, understanding and encouragement, I'm sure your wife will make a full recovery; - I quickly re-passed my Driving Test (a UK requirement after brain injury) and I feel fully fit now and eager to get back to my job. I hope your wife makes as complete a recovery as I have. andyh
