Toe walking

Hi at my last visit to my neuro he asked me if I always walked on my toes. I had never noticed that. Could this be a sign of leg muscle weakness?

Hi, Barbara. I'm new here but not new to MG.

In answer to your question: Yes. This explains it pretty well.

Did your doctor even say anything about it? I love my neuro because he explains everything. We need and want to know all this stuff!

I have no idea if it means you are getting worse or if this is a habit you have of using other muscles when some get more weak. Kind of like how I have a habit of raising my eyebrows when my eyelids droop.

Annie,
You've done it again! Wonderful article and information that I will be taking with me to the neuro eval. Thank you so much!!!!!!

Barbara,
I am very curious about your toe walking, as I have been doing this for quite some time and had found that wearing high heels actually helped my legs perform better and relieved my foot pain. The way I "toe walk" is that I step down on my toes before I step down on my heels when flat footed. I don't actually walk on my toes tippy toe style. Is this what you have been doing without realizing it? It just dawned on me in the past couple of years that I was doing it.

Can't wait to hear from you.

Also, since you have a neuro that doesn't communicate really well, you may need to explain to him/her that you would appreciate the information, in layman's terms as much as possible. Many patients don't care to know all the info (mostly older I think, such as my in-laws who ask NO questions until I prompt them for information - they don't understand, don't really want to know, just want relief).

Talk to you soon.

Becky

toe walking

Most of my weight seems to go on the top front of my foot instead of heel to toe. I never noticed until he said something, then later I walked across the room and did feel that I was not putting down my heel correctly.

I also do this. I'm terribly flat footed and walk on the inner side of shoes.

When i was really weak I would do this - put my toes down first. I decided it was to change which muscles I was using but I probably just made this up. The muscle that is at the front of my ankle below my shin area has deteriorated and I can't walk on my heels at all (not that that is a skill needed in life). My feet just flop down on the floor like I'm a duck if I try to keep my toes raised.

I'm curious if anyone has bunions? Not the blistery-thing, but the joint pain in the big toe. I do and I think it might have to do with the way I walk now that some muscles get weak. When I went to my GP about the pain she said there was nothing they could do and I should stop wearing high heeled shoes (at which point I laughed at her - my feet have never been in high-heels - not even at my wedding or prom!). Anyways, I deal with the pain, take the occaisional tylenyol/parcetemol and try to forget about them. Not life-altering or anything, just annoying. So... what do others think?

I don't have any bunions on the big toe, but have had sharp shooting pains in that joint on occassion.

Has anybody tried "crocs" type shoes. OMG - I just recently found them and there's something about them that seems to help me walk a little better when I'm really have difficulty. Plus, they feel SO GOOD on my feet.

Mmmm Crocs. My friends made fun of me SO much when I bought them and still do whenever i wear them but you are right, SO COMFY. I have very little and quite wide feet so the Crocs fit is great AND because they are so lightweight it takes ages to fatigue my legs. I've not worn them in ages (mostly because I've been quite strong recently so able to wear whatever, and it's been winter in Scotland). Might be time for the Crocs to re-emerge though!
