Temporary Blindness from TN
 

hello im posting for my son and husband. my son was recently diagnosed with tn at the emergency room. my son lost his vision temporarily at work for 30 minutes, and all he could see was a bright white light. my son had severe pain in his eye. i spoke to the ER DR about the tn symptoms. The dr stated that tn can cause like a tic that can jerk the head backwards too. i also asked the dr about other symptoms my husband is experiencing...rapid blinking eyelids and bouncing eyes...my husband is blind when this occurs along with severe chronic head pain. the dr stated that all of these symptoms my husband is experiencing can occur as well with tn. the dr also stated that tn runs in familys. has anyone else ever experienced loss of vision with tn? thanks in advance for replies....take care

No TN here but I did recently experience that same white light and while not blindness I had blurriness and temp vision loss and severe eye pain and severe head pain. Mine however was from a zoster outbreak called Ramsay HUnt syndrome or a type of shingles. My vision loss is getting better.

Ask your husband if he has a feeling like the nerves in his head or eyes are like shaking or spasming or tremoring. Any facial droopiness?

Try to get him to a neuro-opthamologist as soon as possible.

Hello BrokenLady. I hope your son is doing better since his ER visit.

I had an MVD in January. Prior to that, atypical TN for about 4 years. My vision is really messed up. Since the MVD it's not back to normal yet (ie: none of my glasses are really working for me - they feel like wrong prescription).

Neurosurgeon said to give it 6 months, as a small branch of the nerve does go up near the eye. Prior to the MVD I would occasionally get 'ice pick' pain in my eyeballs.

havent had blindness but it definatle effects my eyes, when i'm having an attack i can hardly see anything out mu left eye. I really hope your son feels better!

I took my son thursday to an opthalmologist referred by the ER DR, and she stated she thinks my son does have trigemenal neuralgia, and advised him to go to a neurologist.


My husband has suffered with severe chronic headach pain for ten years. my husband is currently having ice pick pain in eyes, rapid blinking eyelids, bouncing eyes, and loss of vision when this takes place. my husband also was diagnosed with hypoxic encephalopathy. His internist sent him for an EEG to see if this is some kind of seizure causing this. We will find out at next appointment the next course of action for this...the dr mentioned possible brain surgery if this isnt from a seizure. I have no idea yet what kind of surgery. We wont know this until my husband is sent to a neurosurgeon. My husband hasnt been diagnosed with tn by our internist, but the ER DR who examined my son suggested that what my husband is experiencing is also tn. I just hope that we can get help for both my son and husband. I have taken my husband to four different opthalmologist over the past ten years. Each time they were checking for anyerisms or tumors behind his eyes. I just hope we get some answers soon and something can be done to help my husband. thanks everyone for replying to my post. Also ask the neuro about the possibilty of Ramsay Hunt syndrome and Zoster opthamalicus, a possible zoster infection on the trigeminal nerve that affects eyesight. It can occur with no rash symptoms at all. It can also cause encephalitis and head pain (cranial palsies) if severe.

Brokenlady someone on another forum I'm on posted about temporary blindness due to nerve spasm and in that case, there is a correlation between occipital neuralgia and the blindness. I don't know if there is any similarity between their posting and yours. I'll send you a PM. I hope your DH is doing better. Take care!

I have never heard of temp. blindness from t.n. so this info is very helpful but kinda scary and sad too .
I have heard that for o.n. and other "illnesses" tho.
