Vyvanse, new symptoms?
 

My son has TS, OCD and ADHD. He is explosive and we're working on that using Dr. Greene's methods.

He was recently put on Vyvanse and now all of a sudden he is wandering away from our house because he says he has "an unsatisfyable need to explore". Well, we spent the night in a hotel last night and come to find out he wandered out of the room while we were sleeping and was walking around the hallway. He also snuck out on to the patio and was wandering around. The other night I found him standing in the living room, after he had slipped out of his bedroom window.

This is getting pretty scary in terms of safety and mental health.

He is currently taking Zoloft 100 mg, Seroquel 50 mg am and 25 mg pm and just started Vyvanse 20 mg (being upped to 40 mg today).

Any insight would be most appreciated. Please help!

Zoloft and Seroquel can cause akathisia in some patients.
Adding a stimulant may make this more pronounced.

This should be reported to the doctor. When severe, patients may become desperate and commit desperate acts to relieve the inner tension.

I think this is a serious side effect and you should see the doctor ASAP.

Just wanted to add an update. The doctor originally upped his meds (as in the other post) because she 'wanted better impulse control". Well, boy oh boy was that the WRONG thing to do. We ended up in the ER last night because he basically went crazy. Ranting, pacing, eyes dilated, swearing, angry, climing to the very top of the swing set, jumping off (basically dangerous behavior). He knew this wastn' him. He told me he needed to destroy things so I let him bash up a few bricks in the hopes that it would help (joint compression, anger release in a productive way, etc).

Fortunately, he calmed down at the ER and nothing else had to be done, but how sad is it that it took the ER doctor calling his psychiatrist to get her to call us back. We tried calling before we went to the ER and the answering service left messages at all 3 of her contact numbers and she never called us back. I even told them that I needed to talk to someone right away. Since she didn't call back, I called the ER and they told me I should bring him in.

This is not improving my opinion of the medical community one single bit

I just responded over at Latitudes too but wanted to leave another hug as I know how you are feeling. My son was in hospital too with serious med induced psychosis and those kinds of side effects are what eventually led to us weaning him off the drugs and starting the dietary/supplemental/acupuncture etc program that turned things around for him

I hope you will be able to find a different physician to manage your son's care as honestly I would think you have zero confidence left in that psych

Hi Brink, I'm so sorry to hear what's been happening for your son and for you.

I wondered how old your son is and why the prescribing doctor suggested the Seroquel? Do they suspect he has a mood disorder of some kind? If so, I would wonder why they've kept him on the Zoloft.

I was also wondering about the dose of the Zoloft and that's why I'm wondering about the age of your son. I guess that's been prescribed for OC symptoms?

Sheesh, sorry... so many questions.

He is 10.5 years old. The Zoloft is 100 mg in the am, and the Seroquel is 50 mg in the am and 25 mg in the pm. He has what they're calling "episodic mood disorder" which is what the Seroquel is for and also depression/ocd/anxiety which is what the Zoloft is for. Those two seem to be helping somewhat but I hate to have him on these things. We knew he needed to Zolof for a long time and kept putting it off. However, with the EMD I'm starting to think it's more of the "explosive child" issues rather than a mood disorder.

This is the hardest thing I've ever had to do and it's also pretty scary.

Thanks for the links. We've been to both before over the last two years. We've been dealing with this for a little over 2 years and know a lot about what's going on, but when you throw meds into it it makes it a bit unnerving. What's got me befuddled is how quickly things have progressed over the last 2 months, even though he's been in counseling, which we are switching therapists because she just keeps promising to 'teach him relaxation techniques' and never does. This therapist seems to think that he is on the path to psychopathic which in itself is unnerving.

We have an appointment with another therapist that is a lot closer to us. We're hopeful that this group will be more helpful than the last one.
