Sensitivity to plant oils in some products?
Hello,
Often when I take certain vitamins, or even certain foods or drinks, some are new on the market for "a healthy heart" that are to reduce your cholesterol make me feel "funny.":D" Its almost like a panic attack type of feeling, if you have ever had one you will relate to my symptoms. My heart pounds, sound is muffled, I get very light sensitive, its a very overwhelming uncomfortable feeling. The feeling passes after about 15 minutes, then at times I might get a slight headache. It appears not to be an allergic reaction, my breathing is ok, no hives, its very odd. I am highly sensitive to the capsaicin found in red pepper, not allergic just highly sensitive. 20 years ago a doctor told me I was having panic attacks, then I noted it was only after eating pizza with red hot pepper, or food seasoned with capsaicin, and so on. Finally an allergist tested me, and realized it was capsaicin. Although I have had panic attacks also. I noticed this other odd sensitivity years ago, the feeling "funny" but did not think much of it, and actually thought it was just me fearing that I was going to have a "odd" sensation or allergic reaction. However recently with the newly marketed food and drinks that claim to lower cholesterol, I have experienced the unpleasant disorder more and more, and it appears to not be all in my mind, if I may say it that way.:) For example: I drank a glass of minute maid "heart healthy" orange juice, and with in a few minutes I started to feel those terrible sensations. Also I have taken certain multivitamins, and felt that way with in a few minutes after, and other products also the same. I decided to read the labels, to see what was in orange juice, and some of the products to lower cholesterol, and it was plant oils, in the vitamins it was some other type of oils. About one hour ago I tried a sub lingual B12, and with in a few minutes I started feeling funny, so I read the ingredients and guess what, it said mannitol, Cellulose (plant origin):eek: I was so disappointed, because as you might know how to up my B12 has been a debate for me. I felt like I had some control in helping my neuropathy possibly. At any rate, it certainly appears to be the plant oils that make me feel "funny," so now I wonder if I should discontinue taking them, since I can't stand that feeling even though the feeling does pass. Do you think there is any way for me to discover why pant oils would make me feel this way, and if it is safe for me to consume them? Any ideas? Patty |
This is a odd reaction you are having.
My first thoughts are...that cellulose is in all vegetables. I can't see you reacting to it. It is not digested, and passes thru as fiber. The lily family and Nightshade family do cause food reactions that can be unique. Yes, I agree it is an odd reaction to say the least:confused: I am doing an experiment right now. I tried the sub-lingual B12 again, not the complete tablet but half, to see if I felt the same as I did yesterday. That feeling being anxious, light sensitive, and just not right. If it is anxiety, that I am feeling after taking the sub lingual B12, for fear that I will have a reaction, I will feel foolish, and try to fix me.:D Anyway, I thought I would take half while I am calm, and see what happens, as silly as that sounds. Lets see so far, well I am not sure yet, I just took it a few minutes ago, nothing yet..:o I also looked up plant sterols, and it stated that they are in soy bean, sesame seeds too, and I have eaten them with no problems, however I think when the plant oils are in cholesterol food products they might be in concentrate form? Could that be true in the vitamins as well, maybe since it is in concentrate form it is stronger? Well, thanks for the info. I also got B12 tablets at a higher dose, I plan to start taking them if I can't take the sub-lingual. Patty PS..I found the B12 2500mcg sub-lingual right in my food super market, they were 13 dollars for 50 tablets. I hope I can tolerate them, and if so that it might help my neuropathy, or help some part of me feel better.:) |
Just swallow the B12.... don't try the sublingual bit. Not much if any is absorbed that way. Swallow it on an empty stomach.
Your reactions could just be to the flavor, texture etc.(the mouth nerves reacting). See if that changes things. |
I have plant 'reactions'...too.
mostly with foods and preparing them. Not ingesting them tho.
For me it's eggplants and cucumbers [both, I think are nightshades, but won't swear to it]....made my hands and skin feel 'funny' [for want of a better word] when peeling and prepping them. This reaction is much worse now with my neuropathy and I've opted to wear exam gloves to keep the worst at bay. It helps a lot. But-I can't wear them for long for some reason...only about 30 mins or so. I just go with the flo. As for your current reactions? Start really READING those labels! Lots of fine print, tho often you can 'web' up the product sites and get a readable version to see what all is in the stuffs. Golly what you are experiencing doesn't sound much like FUN at all!
