I was just reading on a post that if you do well on blocks that you have rsd.I had a block done on march 31 .It was horrible my whole arm swelled up turned shinny red and the pain level want up to a six to a eight. When before I was a 2 to 4. does this happen to anyone.

That is a common misconception. Doing "well" or not doesn't determine whether you have rsd or not. If you get some pain relief from a block it means your pain is still SMP,sympathetically maintained. If you don't, it means your pain is now SIP, sympathetically independent. What happened to you, well the pain part, is what happened to me. My shot up to 20+ for 2 veeeerrrryyyy long months! I sure hope that's not the case with you. The swelling might have been a reaction of some kind to one of the meds in the block or just a reaction to the block itself. I think the heightened pain happened to me because my body saw it as an intrusion and it "excited" and aggravated my nervous system.

The good news is it shouldn't stay that way. Obviously you shouldn't get any more blocks because they won't help. Sorry you had to go through that!

Hugs,

Karen

I am glad you are getting another opinion. I have seen doctors who are like there way or the highway and I don't like that approach. I am not saying a doc should do something that he feels is not right but there needs to be comunication. I used to be scared to speak up or call but through this I see it really is a must if something is wrong. This will not change the care you get and if it does to me the doctor is not the one for you. Take care

SCS already this is what peeves me that some docs are so quick to rush to the SCS then try other treatments and have this as a last resort type option..
now to blocks they very very rarely help me at all. and in fact the first one made my rsd spread worse than it was already spreading. and even to this day blocks only last maybe 4-8 hrs if im lucky. i have one on the 26th of may for my legs and we will see how that goes. but like you said i would find another doc that is willing to try anything else before the SCS.. there are lots of things to do before you jump head into a SCS

how long have you had RSD
