I had a molar extracted and a bone graft done on Wednesday. Now, the stitches are falling off and a little of the the bone graft material is leaking out. I don't really feel much pain, but I'm concerned. Is it normal for some of the graft material to leak out after the procedure?

Additional note: I would call me dentist, but he's on vacation and his office is closed. He'll be back on Monday, but need to know whether this is typical so that I can see someone else if necessary...

Hi Nadia,

Are you sure the stitches are falling out? Sometimes they look "loose" but they are really tied pretty tight. They should not be falling out this soon after surgery.

It is typical for some of the bone graft material to leak out, but it should not be alot. The graft material is inserted way up inside the socket of bone and then a piece of collagen material is placed over the graft and then the tissue is stitched as snug as possible over the piece of collagen.

If you think the stitches have come out or alot of grafting material is coming out, then it may be wise to see a dentist today. If that is not possible, then see your dentist on monday.

Let us know how you're doing....
