I have MP, need advice

---I also posted this is another forum before seeing this one. It is my first time on this site. I am scared and worried about how I am going to cope with MP. Sounds like all negatives. I want relief but don't want to gain weight which sounds silly but I am sensitive about my weight although I am not overweight. Just an issue I have. I'm 5'3, 132 pounds. I think i got this from a minor car accident. Any help would be wonderful.

Hi,
This is my first post on here. I came across this website while looking for a nature way to relieve the effects of meralgia paresthetica. Everyone seemed to be very nice and caring on here and able to give lots of advice. I have not been diagnosed by a doctor yet because I have been out of the country and don't have my insurance yet but I have done my research and am 100% positive this is what I have. The leg started becoming numb around 6 years ago. I am only 23. Then I went to the chiropractor for the first time in August for an adjustment on my neck and shortly after that the numbness started to increase and spread on the outer part of my thigh. Now within 4 months my leg has become severely painful with burning and shooting pains in my leg. I am going to go to the doctor when I have insurance but wondered if I could find anyone who has this problem as well to tell me if there is anything I can do to help with the pain. I am an active person and play softball and go to the gym and walk/run at night. I am finding that is starting to become impossible with this pain. The slightest touch sometimes brings me to tears. If anyone has any advice on something I can do at home to treat this or what I am in store for as far as treatment I would really appreciate it. I think this happened after a minor accident where I was rear-ended about the time this whole numbness started. I didn't go to the hospital after the accident and my car didn't even have any damage and I never thought that 6 years later I would have something this severe. It may not have been this accident but that is the only traumatic thing that happened to me about the time this started. Please help if possible. Thank you. Tara-

Hi,

I am a TOS sufferer and new to this forum thing but saw your email and wanted to let you know about a good doc that I think deals in this. check out www.nervemed.com. I believe he has treated some females athletes with similar symptoms. I read an article under media and artcile son the website about 2/3 of the way down that section from teh indystar paper.

Hope it helps. Take care
Shelley

hi all , i am new here and have had the symptoms of MP since 1997. i am 52 yrs now and yes am over weight, has i have since 2003 quite working because of drifferent things i never gone to the doctors for like MP and Carpal Tunnel Syndrome. 1997 i was seeing a chiroprator and on my next to last visit he hurt my hip. in time maybe a few years my outer left thigh started going numb. it was just alittle uncomfortable until this year i tried to go back to work. i could only work a total of 7 days, with all my phsyically problems i could NOT work.i really tried cause i have no insurance and could have got some in 90 days. now im having SEVRE PAINS continually.and even sames to be trying to spread larger.im taking over the courter pain pills now not much relief. since the severe pain started a month ago. ive noticed a dip in my thigh rubbing across where the pain is most. has anyone else expertinsed this this dip on the outer thigh. ty for reading and any help

Well I am not sure about that dip thing but it seems to me that where my pain is the worst in my outer thigh that it is swollen there. Now, I am not sure if it is indeed swollen or if it only feels that way because it is numb. YOu know how your sense of feeling is off when a body part is numb? So, that dip thing is a new one to me. Do you think the nerve stuff happened as a result of the chiropractor? I went for a therapuetic massage the other day for my leg and it did help a bit. The shooting pains are not as bad although they are still there. I am going to go to the chiropractor again soon and see what she thinks. I know what you mean about not having insurance, I am in the same boat. I will post here how I feel after going to the CP again. Good luck.

Things Helpful to Me

I recently began having MP symptoms. Ironically it was caused by trying on a back brace to help with a strained back muscle! Within one hour of cinching the belt I felt the characteristic pain down my left thigh. (The aleady inflammed area probably had all the chemicals present to cause more mischief).

I played the Ibuprofen game (which goes first - stomach or leg pain) with very little sleep over the past week. My doctor gave me a regimine of oral steroids that I have held off taking. Looking on line it seems like cortisone injections and local anesthetic may be the real solution. Surgery also seems to be very effective as the last resort. I'm trying to be conservative though.

I discovered, in my case, that the nerve damage seems to be very much on the surface - just above my hip between my spine and rear pelvic bone. Looking at diagrams on the internet I see the nerve runs right over a ligament through the thigh muscle. If I lightly touch that 1/2-inch spot on back, I can induce the pain in my thigh - almost like a sensetive tooth.

I found that the only position that gives relief is a fetal position on the bed - on my knees, chest on pillow, elbows on bed. Sitting with elbows on knees, chair height lowered, also helps a lot. I also discovered that if I totally remove contact with my waistband - lower pants to hips so belt is below my pelvic bone, it really helps. (no tucked-in shirts) Seems to stop the pain-induced inflammation, letting the nerve heal.

I've tried to stay active - and as the week has gone by I found I can do physical things around the house and garden almost pain free now. Mornings, however, are still hard to get through - though its improving.

I see I may have a less severe version that some of you, but maybe these observations will be helpful.

Paul
