Hey there, I'm Jasmine and obviously new here.
Short little intro : I'm 16 years old, with a mother currently in the surgical ICU, she's the reason why I joined Neuro Talk, in search of some answers.
These last few days have been some of the most stressful for my family and I.
This is very long but please bear with me, and help!!

I'll start with where it all started: My mom started complaining of numbness last friday in part of her left leg and arm. She went to go see the doctor on Monday, where the doctor said it seemed like she had suffered a "mini stroke" and assigned my mom an MRI for the following Thursday. The next day (Tuesday) her numbness was gone and she was perfectly fine. Wednesday came and it was back and slightly worse, so my dad decided to take her to the ER and not wait until the next day for the scheduled MRI.
At the ER they immediately got her CT scans, which revealed hydrocephalus (fluid in her brain) with an enlarged right ventricle. She then went and had EEG, EKG's, and ultrasounds which all turned out to be relatively normal. She then had an MRI, where the doctor said there was a small cyst, which they later diagnosed as a colloid cyst. We got this diagnosis yesterday.
The surgeon insisted on not wasting any time and said she should have surgery immediately. So at 10 this morning my mom went to have the cyst removed.
The surgeon came out and told us, that the hydrocephalus had been controlled but they had found no cyst. He even had a second surgeon go in and look, and they also put in an endoscope and check the spot....nothing.

So what I would like to know is, could there have been a problem with the MRI? A shadow? or could the doctors have missed something and there actually be a cyst or tumor still there?
As of this morning before the surgery my mom still had the numbness (she also had it on the left side of her face starting on wednesday) We aren't too sure if the numbness has gone away yet, since she is still very lethargic.

please answer my question! I'm so worried and just need answers.
a little background on my mom : she just turned 50 years old, works out every single morning, very in shape. 3 years ago she had a ski accident where she had a CT scan that revealed hydrocephalus with the enlarged ventricle. The doctor and surgeon were just made aware of that this morning before the surgery, after us begging them to read her previous CT scans.

I am so sorry about your mom and hope she makes a speedy recovery. If they didn't see anything they will more than likely order another MRI just to be sure. If not, you could ask them to run another to make sure. :hug:

Hi ((Jasmine)). Are you there? How did it go with your mom? Is her numbness gone? Like Sandy said, I would ask them about another MRI for another look. And if not, why are they certain one doesn't need to be done?

I think after hearing about her previous diagnosis, they will go to the plate to try and figure out exactly what's going on.

Please let us know.

My family recently went through hell and high water with injuries my mom sustained (she's 83). It's very wearing so try and take good care of yourself as well. :hug:

My mom's numbness is still there :/ but overalll everything else she seems to be doing well. The doctors are starting to think that her numbness has to do with some blood clotting, so after a few tests they might start her on a blood thinner. But we have to wait at least a month for that, due to the healing from the brain surgery. She is still in ICU but doing really really well, although she seems very sad, but I'm just assuming it's from all the meds, and the events from the past few days have been very overwhelming

Yes it is scary when your mom is in ICU. I pray she recovers Godspeed. The unknown is scary. You're being very brave for your mom.

She being in good health will help her recovery. It just takes time.

Hello Jasmine

I have to add my good wishes for your mother. Also I would like to
let you know that I'm sending prayers. I also have a mother who
was in the hospital for a extended stay not too long ago. But
in her situation it was after surgery and a problem then with her
bowels.

I would like to make a suggestion that you ask them to do another
MRI or CT scan. And to also suggest that to help your mom with
her depression or sad feeling to remember to just be yourself as
much as possible.

I know that is hard. But it will help her to know that she is going
to recover and your all there for her.
