Graves Disease, connection with Celiacs disease and sore joints..Sorry so long...

Hi,

I just found this site while researching the connection between Graves and Celiacs disease. I'm continually amazed at how much I have educated myself versus my doctors educating me... I was diagnosed with Graves about 3 yrs. ago after some traumatic events and during a routine physical my doctor found a good sized goiter over my thyroid.

I had always had a ton of energy(too much according to most..) and had a good metabolism and not suffered much from weight problems or health problems in general. I was put on Methamazole and a beta blocker and was recomended to have my thyroid radiated. I live in small community so it took 3 months to see an endocrinologist 2 hours away. I was given basically only two option for the long term control of the Graves, radiation or removal. Although the thyroid meds seemed to be working he said I hade Graves severly and would probably have relapses if I stayed on the meds.I didn't take the radiation and have chosen to stick with the meds. After some time my thyroid levels have been in balance for awhile now with the meds. During this time I gained about yikes 40lbs! As some of you probably know its depressing to have your system slowed down on drugs when your used to going full blast ahead! About the time I came to grips with all of this I developed Graves eye disease. I have a fairly bad version and both eyes are protruding, one beyond my eye socket. I've become so aggravated with the options or lack of that I finally took it upon myself to try and heal with other options.

I started looking at herbs and supplements. And felt much better after getting on the appropriate ones. I weaned myself almost totally off my beta-blocker and take a lesser dose of the methamazole. And my thyroid results are still very good. I was able to drop about 15 of the 40 lbs I gained and am working on the rest of it. All this leads me to the subject of Celiacs disease and Graves. I realized when I eat more breads that I do indeed feel worse. Digestive problems, less energy and bloating amongst other problems like my joints seem to hurt more when I eat more breads and breads relatives. So I read an article about the connection to Celiacs disease and realize i have had stomach problems for as long as I can remember. I've been on a somewhat low carb, high protein diet and one night I splurged and had two pieces of bread and felt horrible the following day. I'm definitely going to follow up on that! I was wondering if anyone has an experience, opinion or knowledge on Graves eyes disease? I am now thinking that because I think I may have celiacs(or similar) disease, Graves and Graves eye disease and year long allergies if this seemingly inflammatory reaction going on in my body if this could also be feeding the Graves eye disease? It really makes sense to me. For now I'm off the wheat and I hope and pray this will stop all these inflammatory problems.

eye disease

I have symptoms of both Hyper & hypo. I had my thyroid radiated 1 1/2 years ago. I had no choice I went into a thyroid storm & spent two weeks in ICU.....I fought for two years or more not to have the Rai.. my thyroid would be okay for a while then not & back & forth until the thyroid storm. I was told most do not recover or survive a thyroid storm like I went through. The docs told my family a few more hours & I would have been dead.
I have Grave's & Disthyroid Orbitopathy a rare disease that happens with or without Grave's or even any thyroid problems.
I also have celiac, fibromyglia, rosacea, & several other autoimmune disorders.
For me celiac is a cake walk compared to the thyroid issues. I was very thin all my life until the thyroid went haywire....I gained a lot of weight after the RAI . Most mainstream docs will only give Synthroid or a generic version. I would love to be put back on a little cytomel to help me function .... my old doc left town so now I'm stuck with only synthroid which isn't keeping me at a even keel all day long. I freeze one minute & burn up the next, irritable, bloated & achy & tired every day around 3:00....
I wish I had answers !!!!!
So to you & others I understand ...

I have just been diagnosed with graves disease and came accross this website while researching the disease. Can anyone share some information on what to expect from this disease?
Thank you so much
