B12 Def Symptoms still there???

I am assuming this is normal. I was diagnosed only about a month ago and started taking 1000 mcg a day and have had 2 shots. I don't beleive my dr is treating me properly and I have an appointment with a hemotologist on Monday to get more information and better treatment and maybe more tests. But in the mean time, I wanted to as others who have gone through the treatments.

Asking if this is all normal... guess I am second guessing myself because my stupid dr told me that shaking isn't part of a B12 def and that I should see a therapist!!!

So I am still having good days and bad days. I had a shot on Thursday and all weekend I was great. No symptoms. But then yesterday on the way to work I started feeling weak and light headed and foggy. I had already taken my 1000 mcg of b12 prior to feeling this way. Same thing today, but not AS bad. I have a feeling I am not taking enough B12 daily but wanted to wait to talk to the Hemotologist before doing anything else.

My b12 was 185 last month... just so you have an idea of how low it is.

so does this sound normal? I do feel better since I've been taking the b12 but I guess I'm expecting faster results. I was shaking every day but now it's only once in a while. I hate my dr for making me feel this way! I really wish dr's would listen more and learn more about the conditions of their patients.

When you are really low, it takes time for your body to recover.

One thing that happens is that B12 is siphoned off to make new red blood cells, and this depletes potassium since it is needed for the inside part of the red cell. When your potassium drops you feel weak and shakey for a while. So choose foods high in potassium while doing the B12 therapy in the beginning. I suggest you read the other B12 threads here...there is much info that you can benefit from

I really think a month is not enough time to see gains. Some people take 3 months, some 6, some a year. It took a while to get where you are, so it will take a while to get back to normal.
Another place the B12 goes is to the CSF..cerebral spinal fluid.
And another is storage in the liver.

If you did not have the "shakes" before the B12 shots, I'd suspect it is the low potassium they are causing. If you only have shakes sometimes, I'd look to blood sugar too. If you are low, you can have similar symptoms.

I have a B12 thread at the PN forum that explains the various treatments. There is a link there from a medical site as well.

B12 is not like a drug...it does not work quickly. It has to be incorporated into the healing your body does.

You might do better on the 5mg oral methylB12 for say 3 months rather than the 1mg. Take it on an empty stomach for best results.

thank you MrsD

Thanks for your info... it is helpful. Deep down I knew that but I guess I needed to hear it. I only started to get the shakes in Feb of this year. I didn't start my treatment until last month. So I suspect the shaking is from the b12 def it's self. I actually do have hypoglocemia (low blood sugar) so I know all about that. I've had that since I was 16. And you are totally right, a lot of my symptoms feel the same. As a matter of fact for a while it was driving me nuts because I thought my blood sugar was dropping and I would eat and feel the same!!! that is how I knew it was something else.

I have been reading and reading and reading all of these threads on B12 and they are very helpful. Last night I got a quarter of the way through Rose's site on B12. Looking forward to getting home to read the rest.

thanks again for your support... like I said, that dr really got me annoyed and frustrated... which in my condition doesn't help at all!

What kind of "shaking"?

I had shaking when I was B12 deficient. I also had a mild tremor in my hands, but the shaking I had was downright embarrassing at times. I'd shake/shiver like it was subzero temperatures... while sitting in 70 degree weather. I didn't have it continuously, but it was not at all uncommon for me to start shivering for no apparent reason.... and I could not stop it. I didn't feel cold... but I shivered like I was.

I list my symptoms here, and I think shaking is on my list. I most definitely had it.

It took a long time for my symptoms to resolve. I noticed some improvements within 3 weeks. The majority of my major symptoms were gone within six months... but I continued to show improvement into the one and two year mark.

wow I just read your list of symptoms... I have to say I am sitting here stunned. When I was 17 I was diagnosed with IBS because of bowl problems. When i was 19 I started having heart palpatations and then at 21 I started having cronic yeast infections, they got so bad every month worse and worse, even perscription meds wouldn't work.

I now read that all of this could have been caused by my low b12, that I could have had low b12 for more then 20 years and not know it until now!

The thing is... these yeast infections were so bad that I would cry all the time about the pain. I went to so many different dr's about it. It didn't calm down until I got pregnent but it eventually started to come back int he past few years. I am not saying that it's for certian that these yeast infections are caused by my b12 def but GOD can you imagine if after 15 years of cronic yeast infections, pain and just living with this on an every day basis and then to find out that this whole time it was something that could have been fixed by b12 treatment.

crazy huh?

thanks for the info

On a side note I think it is also important in healing but could be wrong to control your hypoglycemia through diet. I was reading something about when blood sugar does get too low it can cause issues.

yes Daniella, I have to totally agree. I really feel like my hypoglocemia is more sensitive because of this B12 thing. Eating definatly helps when I am not feeling well. I am trying to watch what I eat anyway because I still need to loose 40lbs... so it will go hand in hand... :)
