I feel positively shitty, sleepy, flu-like when taking neurontin. Does it go away after awhile?

Sorry to hear that you are feeling so crappy right now, Fewdalord!

I was prescribed Gabapentin (Neurontin) just after I was diagnosed with RSD but it didn't help for me and I dealt with a lot of fatigue whilst on it. I think that was one of the reasons why I came off it, as well as the weight gain (I put over 30lbs on in the few months/weeks I was on it)! My Doctor kept telling me that the side effects would settle down but in my case, they didn't and it got to the point where I couldn't physically get out of bed as I was so tired.

I still deal with a LOT of fatigue now but it isn't as bad as when I was on the Neurontin thankfully.

I hope the side effects settle down for you real soon and you get to feeling better. Give it some time for your body to adjust to it and maybe speak to your doctor about it also to see what he suggests you do.

Keep us posted!

Taking neurontin at night is best for these symptoms. Lyrica and neurontin are two different meds in the states. Starting at the lowest dose possible and increasing it slowly--which your neuro discussed with you--helps to prevent many symptoms. Some neuros recommend breaking noncoated pills and and just taking portions daily until your body gets used to it.

Re/Neurontin

Fewdalord! as like the others said when I was on Neurontin I felt awfull too. The flu-like sleepiness, the weight gain. I gained so much weight that I ended up in the hospital, they did not know what was causing it.Once the Dr figured out that it was the Neurontin,I was put on Furosemide 40mg. I still take it know. There are so many warnings about that med even on t.v. I think you should talk to your Dr and find something else to take? Some people can take it,some can not! I sure could not,and did I pay the price. Take Care, and Good Luck! Breezy55 :Zzzz::Scratch-Head:

I am on neurontin and started at 300 at night for a week and have been increasing then spread through the day right now at 1800. At first I felt not sleepy but like my lids I could not hold open and just a little out of it and like a helmet sometimes on but that wore of with time. I think for me it is key to start slow and expect some discomfort from meds like when I first started Cymbalta I thought I would throw up for a few weeks but it wore off and now no bad symptoms. Now I am not talking big symptoms but small ones I would rather cope with for a short time of crappy for the hope of a long time of better. Hang in there.

Hey fewdalord,
I'm so sorry you are feeling so ill.A lot of us have other disorders besides rsd. I have fibromyalgia. I have a lot of achiness, feels like the flu. It is an autoimmune disorder. Some feel it comes from the immunte virus of epstein barr.
There is another drug similar to Neurotin, called Lyrica, and some RSD patients do better with Lyrica that Neurotin. I switched and felt better, less pain. It also has the side effect of weight gain.,but maybe you could discuss Lyrica with your Dr. It doesn't take as much-I was on 400 mg. of Lyrica instead of 3200 mg of Neurotin.
Don't forget about epson salt baths. Take care and keep in touch. loretta
