Potassium
I need to get some Potassium and was wondering if anyone has any advice concerning it? How much to take, type, etc.
Thanks :) |
OTC potassium is limited to 99mg per tablet.
The daily intake you should have is 4500mg a day. Hence supplements you can buy are like spitting in the ocean. The best way is to use high potassium foods. One can of V8 has 680mg/12 oz. (about the same as an RX supplement). 1/2 cantaloupe 1500. This site gives amounts of nutrients in foods, and can help you choose high potassium foods in your diet: http://www.nutritiondata.com/ If you eat well, you should not need a supplement unless you take drugs that deplete potassium like diuretics, steroids, etc. Chronic diarrhea will deplete potassium quickly. The reason OTC supplements are limited is because self medicating with potassium is dangerous. If you believe you need potassium, you should consult a doctor and have tests to see if you really do. |
Thanks mrsD! A fountain of knowledge for sure!!! :)

That is why I eat cantalope cause I read that. I always had heard bananas but in reality cantalope has more. What maes you feel you need more? Do you have cramping? I too have read that what Mrs D stated about supplements for this and the need to be careful.

I need to read her post about it. If you read articles on it it seems to be critical for the firing of nerves. When I'm cramp up verses when I'm eating cantalop, banana's etc. the twitching is much less.
I apologize for not reading up in on the board posts concerning it. mrsD kind of got on my about that. LOL  |
No sorries needed. I did not mean it as wrong to ask. I just had read that about pottasium. It is good you see the connection and see relief too.

Ok I have searched and read them. :)
I eat lots of cantaloupe in the summer but it's not that big here in the winter. I love the stuff! |
Bananas and white potatos also contain quite a bit
