Polio - Anyone know much about it?
I was wondering...is there anyone here who had polio or their parent/s did?
My mother contracted Polio as a child, and now she is in her 70’s and had/has what they now call ‘Post-Polio Syndrome’ for quite a few years. It’s only in recent months that I started researching Polio, when I realized I knew very little about it, other than what my mother has told me about her experiences…which wasn’t a lot! I was also told by one Dr. that children of polio survivors could possibly have birth deficiencies or defects, and I wondered if my Dandy-Walker could be connected to being born to a Polio victim/survivor? (He didn’t know if that was a possibility though!) I haven’t found any evidence online about any birth defects or other problems, but there was a link to children of a Polio mother, (who was pregnant at the time of contracting Polio), and that these children can develop muscle weakness and other symptoms of ‘Post-Polio Syndrome’. Other than that, I haven’t found any evidence. But I’m still curious…:o ~Jaime~ |
Post-polio syndrome involves the tissues which polio virus is attracted to: nerves, more specifically the motor nerves. antibody formation is thought to be the cause, and children may experience similar as a result (possibly crossing the placenta). Dandy-walker formations, and other types of "mal"formations have not been associated with polio. Dandy-walker is a result of inadequate migration of nerve/neuron cell progenitors during development--and no one has found polio antibodies to cause this abnormality specifically.
