What would you do...
 

If you won a big lottery jackpot? Erin brought it up on another thread and it made me think about it. Maybe it has been asked before and I am too lazy to search for it...but what would you do?

Four things come to mind for me...

1 - Pay off all my debts and put a bunch in the bank.
2 - Pay off all my sister's debts and put her in a position to do some travelling like she has always wanted to but couldn't afford.
3 - Buy a large piece of property out in the Texas Hill Country and start a wildlife rehabilitation ranch where shelters could release wildlife that has been rehabilitated but might be too comfortable around humans for its own good.
4 - Build a house on the north side of Little Cayman facing the Bloody Bay Wall and get a pilot's license so I could fly myself down and go scuba diving on a more regular basis.

So what about you?

I'd buy a lot (more) yarn and travel to places just to sit and crochet or knit with it. (probably buy local yarns made wherever I'd travel)

Or, I might start my own yarn store.

I'd buy myself a house.

I'd buy my sister a house. I'd also set her kids up with college money (and living expenses so they wouldnt have to worry about that when they go to college) I'd probably also pay for private school now...and the special programs that one of my nieces is in because she has (high functioning) Aspbergers. (autism)

I'd also try to save a friend's business if they'd let me do it.

1.travel more.
2.help the local dog shelter. they are overwhelmed.
3.fund our local food bank. they have empty shelves.
4.fund a church mission to an american city where the members help those in need.
5.help the local library. They do great reading programs but are underfunded.
6.extend the land I own, and make it more private.
7. buy the hubby any truck he wants.
8. donate to MS
9. donate to cancer fund
10. spa treatments baby!

First I'd faint, then I'd hire an accountant and an attorney. Then I'd have to sit down and make a list!

Give to the Church
Give to the MS Center at Vanderbilt
Start a Foundation to Support MS issues
Take golf lessons

First, nobody but me would know if I did win big!!

I see stories on the news all the time about people who have some critical medical condition and have no insurance. Or a child who has a disease and needs special treatment but the family can't afford it. These are the people I'd love to help. I'd help them on the condition they not reveal who funded their treatment or who helped them. I hear about people all the time who've had some tragedy cause upheaval in their lives and every time I hear about them I think "if I could just win the lottery I could help them."

There's a show on TLC called "How the Lottery Changed My Life". I watched it once and was so disgusted at the manner in which these people wasted their money that I haven't watched it since. Lavish homes, dozens of cars, ridiculous furnishings, etc. Maybe it's just me but I couldn't enjoy any of those things knowing that there were people going without the bare necessities while I overindulged myself.

My kids would be set for life. I would be debt free. But nothing outlandish or over the top. We'd be comfortable....but so would alot of other folks, too. :)

i saw that show! I was amazed how selfish, greedy, and stupid folks were. The FIRST thing you need is to NOT TOUCH IT. get an advisor, and an a good attorney, and discuss it first. Then make it spread out in several directions, and make the bulk of it earn more money for you, and take a chunk and play, but by no means spend like you earn that amount every day of the week. sheesh!

I have so many great projects in my head that are so worthy, and would benefit greatly from just a lil boost. What fun that would be!

Hire a good lawyer. Then pay off my debt, help the family out, set the boys up for life, buy a nice cabin out in the mountains and hire people to shop and do my laundry. Jim and I would then sit back and enjoy the freedom to toss money at those in need which is what would make us happy to do.

All that lavish spending is not my style either. Simple things in life keep complications at bay.

1) Make sure Chris was taken care of for the rest of his life
2) Payoff all my bills
3) Tear down my house and build a new one that perfectly fits all Chris' needs and add a pool.
4) Give my 10% to church
5) Start a foundation for younger adults with MS that make sure they have a place to stay if they must require care and can no longer live at home.
6) Make sure my family was taken care of
7) Travel
