Melatonin is a lifesaver!! It is the natural hormone your body produces to induce sleep. My body reacts strangely to all my meds and they keep me awake. I take two Benadryl and 5 mg. Melatonin every night, and I sleep very well except for a few trips to the bathroom becasue of Interstitial Cystitis. If you research it, you'll see that some people require up to 40mg of Melatonin, but you can start with very little- 1 to 3 mg, and increase until you find what works for you. The sleep med you take probably has some in it, but the pure form works best from what I have seen. My family and friends all use it when they have trouble sleeping becasue it is non-habit forming and has no next-day side effects. You can find it at any store in the vitamin section. My favorite is a sublingual (dissolves under your tongue) 1 mg pill made by GNC becasue I can increase it as I need to and even keep one on the nightstand in case I wake up and can't go back to sleep. Hope you get some rest soon.

I have severe sleep issues. We are talking I can go full night without. I'm actually about to go to my psych today. I had sleep issues pre rsd so with this it is very hard. I was also suggested a sleep study. I don't have apneia etc but there is a med that my psych was telling me about that only a specialist can rx and it helps people with pain too. Anyhow I have tried many from trazadone, ambien, lunesta I could go on. Now since you said you are sensitive what about a med like ativan or serequel which I am on and is supposed to aid with sleep but not for that purpose only? Be careful guys wth the otc meds like tylenol PM or maybe Benedryl too I am not sure but those are very hard on the liver. I am fearful of that because I have had high liver issues and thought at one time had pancreatitis

Pete I never ever ment to compare anyones pain, never in my life have i ever thought anyones pain is worse than another doesnt matter what it is or what its from. I would never say my pain is worse than anyone elses and never have I ever felt that way, and I know everyone else here has RSD that is why I asked this question is because I know others here are going through what I am, so others might have ideas that could help that maybe I havent tried yet. I never ment say anything to hurt or compare anything and am so sorry if I wrote something that offended anyone, please forgive me.

What consists of a sleep study? I will speak to my doctor about everything and see what he says. Thank you all again for your help, I greatly appreciate everyones info and advice!

Niki

Hey, Niki,
I'm SO Sorry!!
I didn't mean to infer that you were saying you hurt worse than anyone, I was actually saying that about myself, that I didn't want to seem to be saying that.
Please forgive me.

A sleep study, (Mine, or others that I know of and have read about), you go into a specialized "unit" in the hospital, where the room is more like a nice hotel.
You can get comfy for a while, then, they put some monitors on you, and connect you to a modem, which feeds to the computer. They make you as comfy as possible, you have a TV, private bathroom, and the door gets closed, the sleep unit will be very quiet.
Then, depending on what they find, they may try a CPap or BiPap machine on you.

I imagine you need to rule out anything else, because RSD can affect so many other things in our bodies. (I got Apnea).
Then, you may need to address your pain better. It's just not good to live with that level of pain!
I got no relief, until I was put on methadone. And, I've been on it since around 1990.

Sleep is so crucial to our lives and thinking, our moods. It affects most every aspect!

So, I suggest you ask your doctor about the test, and, get that pain level reduced somehow.

Be Well!

Pete

Sleep issues, pain or insomina Melatonin or xaxanx

hi Niki, I thought who ever asked this it was a great question. If it is severe pain, which is what it sounds like for me if I can get the pain down at least to a level 6 what works best for me is not a sleep aid but an anxiety aid. Although I have to be very careful as to which one and the dosage or I have very serius complications.
My pain management doctor and I figured this out through much trial and error. we tried, lunesta, ambein, ambeincr, etc. then heavier sleep aids, still no luck or worse side effects. Now a very low dose of anxiety medicine, xanzx .025mg is what helps me to go to sleep. It takes the worry of the pain off my mind jsut enough. this has taken us year to figure out. I also alternate with Melatonin, which LTL mentioned, it too is wonderful , I do this so I do not become dependent on xanax. Hope that helps, good luck, cz

I have a very fine often nearly imperceptible tremor. It tends to start up when I go to bed and I won't sleep as long as it's firing even if I don't notice it. Perhaps it's merely a symptom of what's keeping me awake. Tizanidine (zanaflex) knocks it out. I started on 3 mg and over the years worked up to 6 mg but now I'm down to about 5 1/2. My original doctor prescribed 8 but my last one wanted to limit it to 6.

This tremor can be anywhere but is usually in my affected hand. It tends to be very low amplitude and very high frequency but it can shake quite a bit and more slowly at other times.

I think that for any of us who have been in, how shall I say this, catastrophic accidents, (anything you do that causes rsd is catastrophic), but I mean like an auto accident, that you get good and banged around in.
Knocked out.
bruised everywhere. That kind of catastrophe, really ties in to what you're speaking of: these "Tremors".

Tremors come in so many kinds, and sizes, and some are more like seizures. I have a tbi (traumatic brain injury), and the I have a tremor, and sometimes don't notice it. (For instance, at a check out line, when I'm paying, the cashier will ask why I'm shaking. I guess my eyeballs shake at the same rate)
It can keep me from writing or typing. Any "fine motor" skills are a mess.

But then there are the miniature seizures that I get. Together, these things are so TIRING!
Often a diazepam works well, and actually Gives me energy, because I stop burning it with the "shaking".
Imagine, trying to Make yourself shake like that? How tiring it would be?

So I'm d'x with TRANSOMNIA. Weird huh?

I don't know if I'm gonna sleep, or just stay awake!? Days with very little sleep, days with very little waking time.
Most annoying, and sometimes I want to scream, I get so frustrated.

So, for anyone who has ever hit their heads, watch for these sort of tremors, and, the seizures are REALLY DIFFICULT to figure out. A typical "light test" for the seizures doesn't show them.
They're intermittent.

So think about it. Do you have "Transomnia"? toooooo? :winky:

Hope not!!

Pete
