Question new medication..

Hi there..
In the interests of finding me pain relief my doc and I have decided to try Flurbiprofen (froben SR = time released) and Rabeprazole (pariet) to protect my tummy from the first drug a NASAID?

Been on those for 2 weeks now and I can say its takin my pain down a point (yahoo!) but I was takin ibuprophen for the break through pain and with that drug I cant anymore.

So nothin for breakthrough and flares.. been rough, talked to the doc today and though I have been trying very hard to stay off narcotics decided it was time and to try a newer lesser of the evils my doc said in the narcotic dept drug called Tramacet.. I am alergic to codine but he says it is a difrent branch of drug.

Anyone tried this?

Startin to feel like a pharmacy these days.

Take care all,
soft hugs,
Sandra

Ah, that's why! You're in CANADA! Was wondering why those med's sounded so unfamiliar to me. Thought I'd tried everything yet none of those sounded familiar.

Tramacet is probably the US equivalent of Ultram. I did try that...and I believe that is the drug that absolutely WHACKED ME OUT! However, don't be afraid. My pain doc said he never had any of his patients be affected by that medication the way I was...but he understood meds affect people differently. I could NOT take the ultram. I couldn't concentrate on anything, I couldn't put a sentence together - heck, I couldn't put two WORDS together. I was a total mess. And...I've "heard" this is more addictive than a lot of opiods. However...I didn't take it long. Just for a few days. I couldn't! I couldn't function on it.

I always, always, always check out my new meds here: www.askapatient.com because these are REAL PEOPLE who have taken the medications and post their experience with them. I have found that many times people have similar experiences with drugs, that probably SHOULD be listed as a side effect in the pharmaceutical insert, but isn't. I also read that page because I want to know if something I experience while on the medication was experienced by anyone else. The package insert does't always tell you everything.

With you being in canada, if you go to that site to look up your medications, and you can't find them, try googling it first to see if there is another name for it that you can look up.

LisaM,
Hey thanks for that website you posted. That is such a KEWL site.

Sandel,
Supposedly, Utram/Tramocet is suppose to work alot like codeine. I hope it works for you. Also a note, It made me ITCH when I would first use it. I used it when I had BTP (Break Thru Pain) med when I had a flare due to Fibromyalgia back in the 90's when the med first came out. I asked my doc back then about the itching & should I stop taking due to possible allergic reaction. He said that since I didn't break out with hives or a rash of any kind & had no difficulty breathing to keep using it & see if the itching went away eventually. It did go away completely. I also was able to use it when I first came down with RSD. Anyway, after I stated using it daily for RSD pain the itching went away. Now to be honest it didn't help all that much for me but more than likely it will help the next person alot. Just wanted to let you know that just because it may make you itchy (BTW the itching happened with my daughter also) doesn't mean you are allergic BUT for Gosh Sakes, make sure you monitor yourself if you do itch when your first start taking especioally if yo do keep taking it just incase you are truly allergic to it. And keep your Doc informed also.

Default I use it

My Rheumy prescribed it for me for myofacial pain. This was after my first round of RSD was in remission and before round2 began. If I take it at a rate of 2 tablets at a time and take it at max dose for a day or so ( I am allowed to take it up to four times a day), it will help quite a bit. BUT it gives me a nasty headache (migraine strentgth!!). We found that if I am on at least 175 mg topomax, I can use the Ultram without the headache being so bad that I could not tolerate it.

It has not helped the RSD pain. I will use when the myofacial pain is kicking up, but even using it 8 a day for 2-3 months did not do anything for the RSD. She does not prescribe Ultracet because of the tylenol in it. She told me I can take tylenol with it if I really needed to, but would prefer I did not. (that is the difference between ultram and ultracet - added tylenol.)

A woman I work with accepted some Ultram from another co-worker for a backache one day. She took only one-- and two hours later, nearly had to be hospitalized it made her so sick. They wanted to call the emergency squad, but she refused. This was on a Friday afternoon. Someone drove her home and waited while her husband was called home from his job to be with her. She was ill all weekend. Vomiting, chills, pain, diarheah, rash etc. She said she had never felt so bad. She has a daughter that is 10 or 11 and it was a perfect lesson for her on what happens to you when you take drugs from other people.

Other than the headache, I have no ill effects from it. And, I am normally very susceptable to side effects. So, I think you just have to try it to see.

Jules

Default tramacet

Hi thanks..

Both new pain meds seem to be helping me somewhat, I have an allergy to codine and was waiting for the itching to start but no adverse reactions last night or this afternoon so I think I'll be fine with it.. I have had a headache both times taking it but hopefully it won't be a problem

Tramacet is like Ultram except that it has paracetamol with tramadol hydrochloride instead of acetaminophen, or so I have read.
They don't make the pain go away just a bigger edge off it.. *sigh* I am however grateful for what ever helps.

Here is another good place to find out about meds..

I hope you have a good night ladies, thanks

Default must not be the same...

Sandel...
Even though the generic name for Ultram is tramadol.... Ultracet and tramacet must be two different things.

tramacet must be available in Canada, and Ultracet in the US.

When I looked up Ultracet at medicinenet.com it says "tramadol, 37.5 mg and acetaminophen, 325 mg."

Perhaps there is a tramacet available here, just that medicinet does not have it on their site.

Just wanted to clarify for anyone in US who is taking Ultracet that it is listed as having acetaminophen.

I am glad it has helped you.
