It could be frozen shoulder, severe muscle spasms, spasmodic torticolis , dystonia.... I'll post a few info links shortly - you probably can't type too well to do searches yourself...

If you can , post a bit more about your symptoms..

I did a quick look at your earlier posts and I wondered if you have read anything about thoracic outlet syndrome?
I know how your injury happened , but when the neck & elbows , shoulders & hand are mentioned - I usually want to mention TOS just in case.

Sometimes RSD and TOS pain & symptoms can mimic /overlap each other, or you possibly could have both conditions.

It would be good to be sure as the treatments do vary a bit.

here's the useful sticky with TOS info if you like to read about it.

Have you thought about a chiropractic evaluation or been checked for any spinal problems?
C spine problems can affect neck/shoulder/arms also

Hi Babs, I am so sorry you are having these symptoms. I just looked up Dr. Hooshmands website because he has some good information on 'frozen shoulder' His website is: rsd.rx Then go to puzzles list. Frozen Shoulder is Puzzle #75

I got RSD following breast biopsy. My symptoms were swollen arm and then frozen shoulder. I had no movement and very painful. I was in physical therapy for a long time, but have FULL use of my shoulder /arm My therapist warned me it might go to the other shoulder and it did. more pt and have full use of right shoulder. On both shoulders I did massage therapy for an hour before the pt out of pocket expense. I had a rehab dr. overseeing my pt. No RSD diagnosis for 4 yrs. but my present dr. said I had RSD. RSD used to be called shoulder hand syndrome and after both shoulder got well, I did get rsd in both hands.

I have been seeing my current dr. for 6 years. He is a neurologist, psychiatrist, and pharmacologist. He just built two clinics with HBOT, which I am going to have that treatment. I've had RSD 15 years now, am completely mobile except left hand 50% frozen. delay in treatment because of wrong diagnosis. Anyway, here is an experience he just had in his Scottsdale, AZ
clinics:

A lady was in an accident on one of our freeways. Two cars collided and ran into a metal fence. One of the poles became a missle and went thru her front windshield. It took off part of her little finger and part of her arm. The Drs. saved her arm with 18 operations. Her neuro.called my neuro and asked him if he would take her as his HBOT patient. He said he would. After 9 treatments, she was waving her arm at the local TV crew with full range of motion.

One thing that helped me a lot to continue in full range of motion is swimming and water therapy (on my own) RSDSA says our water temperature should be 86 degrees. Cold water or Ice is a NO NO. Hot Tups are not recommended either.

Please know we are thinking of you. Good advice to get to your Dr. soon.
Dr. Hooshmand in Florida is retired and turned over his practice to another Dr.
My Dr. said Tampa Florida at the VA Hospital has just put in 16 HBOT. That stands for Hyperbaric Oxygen Treatment. The chambers are put at 100% oxygen at over twice the pressure. Helps circulation. If you go to pt, make sure your therapist has experience with RSD. If no experience, they can be overly aggressive. That was my experience anyway.

Let us know how you are doing, your friend, loretta with soft hugs

I have this fairly regularly.
I DO have Thoracic Outlet Syndrome (TOS).

If you have, take a muscle relaxer,
get some moist heat there.
Or, even menthal Gel. (NEVER BOTH TOGETHER!) It'll burn your skin.

And, SLOWLY, Gently stretch your range of motion.
That is, stretch to slightly beyond where the pain starts, in All directions.
ears to shoulders, turn head each way, chin to chest and look up!
Do this slowly, very slowly.
Then, if you have someone to gently massage the area, get some circulation going.
Then repeat.
Do this several times a day.

A Chiropractor is great for this sort of thing!

I hope you get some relief soon.. But, if you just let it "lock up", it'll get worse.
You've got to keep it moving. Especially if you're certain nothing is broken.

I'm not a doctor, this is why I suggest a chiropractor.
I've been dealing with this since 1983.

Let us know!

Pete

I am so sorry to hear you are in such pain. It does sound like Frozen Shouler though. The freezing stage is extremely painful. I have had frozen shoulder in both shoulders. I am in the unfreezing stage on the left after three years of frozen shoulder. be careful if they want to give you any cortison shots as this does not always help frozen shoulder. I am actually thinking that the cortisone shot that I had for my frozen shoulder might have caused some damage and possibly RSD based on how its acting.

If it is frozen shoulder look up the Neil Ascher technique and try to find a therapist that treats this way. I hear that they have pretty good success with it.
