You got a lot of good responses. I want to add a note about plates and mirror tags. I am in the motor vehicle business. The mirror tags are convenient because, as Pete said, you can take it along when you ride in another car. I take mine when I travel on business or vacation and put it in the rental car. Most states now prefer to issue the mirror hangers. Every state is different but here is Wisconsin I was able to get two tags so I did not have to keep switching it from car-to-car. The metal plates that are permanently bolted onto your bumper and have the universal disabled logo serve the exact same purpose. There is no difference in your rights as a driver (or more precisely, as a “parker” :D) by having these plates. These are generally issued for vehicles that are equipped with special adaptive devices like wheelchair lifts, hand controls, special door openings, etc. Another reason to request and get the plates instead of the mirror hangers is for someone who has a difficult time putting the tag on the mirror and removing it because of back or shoulder problems. Many people do not realize that it is illegal to drive with the disabled parking permit tag hanging from the mirror. Likewise for fuzzy dice, graduation tassels, air fresheners, or anything else that blocks vision. The tag is supposed to be removed each time before you drive for safety. It is not likely that you will be pulled over just for that violation. But like most traffic laws safety is the reason behind why it was enacted. Go get it. I use mine on “bad” days and leave it in the glove box on “good” days. Mike |

I live in California. I actually got the plates due to having Fibromyalgia years before RSD hit. Out here you also get the tag that hangs from the rear view mirror to take along when you ride with someone who doesn't have the plates.
Also out here if you just get the disabled tags, you pay for them every 6 months (can't remember how much). When you have the plate, you don't pay anything for having disabled plates. Debby |
