Ok so today I found out.....I'm pregnant. I wont be able to continue with my current medications either. Oxycondone and Diazepam. I spoke with a doctor today and will go in to see my own on Monday. Wow. This was actually prevented against but I guess it was meant to be. Has anyone here gone through pregnancy with CRPS? ANY help or advice would be appreciated!

I hope everything goes well for you with this whole new part of your life....keep positive about it all, like you say, maybe it was just meant to be.....

Stay well and be happy - becoming a mother is an incredible experience, and although with CRPS it will be more challenging, you will still find plenty to enjoy.

Congrats!! As I understand it (and I am not an expert by any means) your body will do really well during the pregnancy due to the added growth hormones your body will produce. In fact many go into somewhat of a remission during this time (similar to how MS patients often stop progression during pregnancy) The birth however if you need a C-Section will need to be well planned to prevent spread. After the birth sadly the pain will likely return and may even be more severe for a time while your body re-adjusts.

Full Term Pregnancy and RSD

Many thanks for your e-mail regarding RSD and Pregnancy.

We usually encourage carrying to full term, unless the pelvis is very small, as a C-section will make the RSD worse. Normal delivery is fine with RSD, as long as the mother takes minimum amounts of morphine and cuts down or excludes other medication, as they can cause fetal deformities. Specifically, such medications as Methadone or Fentanyl are very harmful.

As you go into later stages of pregnancy the baby will provide all the hormones the mother needs such as, endorphines for pain, estrogen, growth hormones, etc... So the mother will normally get significant improvement with the signs and symptoms of RSD. However, after delivery the patient is deprived of all these hormones and the pain will return.

I'm a little nervous. I already have an almost 8yr old and thought I was done having children. Me and my fiancé (who's being very supportive), had actually been using "preventative" measures, but I guess this was meant to be. I'm not so much worried about the pregnancy, but afterwards. I'm not supposed to life over 3-5 lbs, so as you can imagine that might present a few problems....I suppose I'll deal with it but, I am a bit more scared than I was the first time around. Also, As I said I won't be able to take the medications I'm on, and am a bit nervous about that, but will do everything I can to ensure a healthy pregnancy.

I appreciate you input, and advice. I'll keep you updated.

Congrats on the pregnancy! I actually just had a "scare" this past week as I was over a week late but turns out it was a false alarm (also taking "preventative measures). I was such a crazy mess of emotions and thoughts...worrying about how I would be able to take care of a baby...but ultimately calmed down into the knowledge that what is meant to be will be and things will always work themselves out in these situations. Things may be hard...but you and your baby and your family will all make it through this. Fingers crossed that you are one of those who goes into remission during pregnancy...what a blessing. Hugs!

Hi CRPSsongbird!

I wasn't dealing with RSD when I was pregnant, but I was dealing with CFS (another really vicious "invisible" disease that people don't understand ) and I wanted to share the encouraging fact that I actually improved a little bit during each pregnancy, and I kept the improvements. Had my first doc apt today. I am about 5-6weeks along, further than I thought! Also they are keeping the oxycodone but cutting the dose in 1/2 and only 2-3x's a day. I'll have an apt with an OBGYN soon and go from there. Still a shocker lol. I thought I was done having kids lol. I guess not
