I had knee surgery on my "good" knee which I messed up compensating for the bad one. RSD started for me with a knee injury and DVT. I went into remission after about 9 years of living with rsd. When I had the knee surgery I was in remission and while my ortho was aware of the rsd, being he was one of the first to dx me almost 20 years ago he wasn't really sure how to proceed with PM after surgery to prevent the rsd from coming back. I was given additional pain meds during and after surgery and while I had a flare of the rsd it calmed down quickly and did not come back full force. To prevent this I started moving almost immediatley after surgery and went to pt to help. It worked and the rsd calmed down after about 4 weeks post op and I was able to resume my life. I made it through surgery without the rsd coming back, but having dvt again several years later brought the rsd out of remission and this time it is worse and shows no sign of going back into remission. I am debating the same thing with knee surgery now, I have reinjured my knee and torn the meniscus not sure if I should proceed with surgery but the pain is bad and getting around is hard and I keep wondering at this point with the rsd back will it get worse, and if so what is worse? Initially the rsd was in my right leg, when it came out of remission it now effects both legs, feet, hips, spine and right hand. It's hard to know what is the best thing to do. Good luck with your decision and please keep us posted as to what you decide.
take care, Sheri |

Hugs Debra!
I am new to being diagnosed with RSD ...lived with it 5 years caused by gallbladder surgery and have known i had it for 4 months...SO with all that in mind, i dont know much BUT could it help you to get a Ketamine infusion before you have the knee surgery? Maybe it could stop the affect of RSD spreading in your knee. Just a hope and a thought. Hugs Lori Quote:
