Need to have a Port-a-Cath implanted
I have been scheduled for surgery in early August for the insertion of a port-a-cath for use during my ketamine infusions, because the veins in my good hand are almost completely shot - I'm down to just one vein that works. I experience horrible burning pain in my hand and my wrist after my infusions that can last for several days that's likely phlebitis. Bummer....
I've been doing some research on them and it seems that there are definite benefits to having one, but there's a number of risks, too. The thought of having a scar on my chest is depressing me, even though most of my clothes would probably cover it. Plus there is going to be monthly maintenance appt. with a certified professional needed to maintain the port if I don't have an infusion done.
Does anyone here have one of these? Do you have any advice for me? How bad will the surgery be? I am scheduled to have it done on an outpatient basis with local anethesia, immediately followed by regular 2 days of ketamine infusions.
XOXO , Sandy
